Sixteen years ago today, on December 14, 2005, the 20-year-old Lionel Messi was awarded the Golden Boy of the Year Award.
The Golden Boy Award was founded in 2003 by The Turin Sport to recognize young players who performed well that year. The awards are voted by key European media and are judged by under-21 players who play for European clubs.
The top three golden boy awards in 2005 were Messi, Rooney and Podolski.
