It is reasonable to say that the two may have gotten closer to each other this time, but after that until Chairman Mao's death, the two did not see each other again for 17 years.

He Zizhen was born in Yongxin County, Jiangxi Province, the eldest daughter of the township squire He Huanwen. In August 1927, the 18-year-old He Zizhen came to Jingyanggang with the Jiangxi Yongxin rebellion team, and when she was just an adult, she had fair skin, long black and thick braids, and a student appearance, which was called "Yongxin Yizhihua" by the army.
In October of the same year, Chairman Mao led the remnants of the Autumn Harvest Uprising to Jingyanggang, and when he first met He Zizhen, he was attracted to her eyes - the girl in front of her, sunny and lively, full of righteousness, although thin, but like an endless energy, is indeed impressive.

On the eve of the Spring Festival in 1928, He Zizhen accompanied Chairman Mao to conduct social surveys in neighboring villages. Through getting along during that time, Chairman Mao discovered that He Zizhen was a special girl: she worked in a fiery and very capable way, got along well with the masses, and played a key role in the smooth completion of work tasks. After work, He Zizhen, who had quieted down, was gentle and virtuous, and immersed herself in studying, and Chairman Mao gradually became more curious and concerned about this multi-faceted girl.

Every time Chairman Mao wanted to go on a long trip, he would knock on He Zizhen's window and tell her, "I'm leaving."; He Zizhen often asked Chairman Mao for advice when he encountered difficulties in study and work, and gradually became dependent on him. In May 1928, the two married at Jinggangshan and began their married life.
The next ten years were the most difficult decade of Chairman Mao's political career, but for He Zizhen, those days were worth her life to reminisce about. In her later years, He Zizhen once said to her descendants that these years were the most beautiful years in her life.

In the early years of their marriage, because of the left-leaning mistakes of Wang Ming and others who occupied the leading position in the party at that time, after the defeat of the fifth anti-encirclement and suppression campaign, the Red Army began the Long March. Chairman Mao and He Zizhen struggled for their ideals in the rain of bullets and bullets, and on one occasion when the enemy made a surprise attack, He Zizhen alone led the enemy away and covered the withdrawal of the large troops, while she was shot and fell in the strafing of the enemy's aircraft.

Compared with the talented woman, He Zizhen is more like a warrior, tough and strong. In the subsequent work, she always demanded progress and wanted to improve herself through study and exercise, and Chairman Mao hoped that she could do work like secretaries and assistants as before, and assist herself around. The two had many quarrels about this issue, and the estrangement became deeper and deeper.
Later, He Zizhen's body also had problems. When she was injured in the previous war, due to insufficient medical conditions, the deep shrapnel in her body has not been removed, and she hopes to leave Yan'an for Shanghai for surgery to alleviate the physical pain of many years, and also wants to escape the current environment and let each other calm down for a while.

However, even this did not change He Zizhen's determination to leave, and at the end of 1937, He Zizhen stubbornly left Yan'an and left Chairman Mao.
At that time, Shanghai had just fallen, and He Zizhen had to change his plan and choose to go to the Soviet Union for treatment, which was many years.
He Zizhen He, who left in a negative mood, had thought that this parting would be half a life. After He Zizhen arrived in the Soviet Union, his life was not smooth, he became increasingly poor economically, his health was not recovered, and he was persecuted and sent to an insane asylum.
After negotiating with the Soviet side, He Zizhen returned to his homeland in 1947 and took up party work in the northeast region. After moving to Shanghai, Chen Yi, an old comrade-in-arms, helped her arrange a place to live and found a doctor to adjust her body. During this period, the chairman and He Zizhen had several letter contacts because of their common child Li Min, and the chairman also instructed He Zizhen to let her recuperate with peace of mind and cooperate with treatment.

"We met, you don't talk, just cry. I can't see it later, and I want to say it again. ”
Gradually, He Zizhen finally stopped her tears and began to talk to Chairman Mao, and she wanted to talk to the man in front of her in detail everything from leaving Yan'an to the Soviet Union.
But she is really poor in both her physical condition and mental state.
On the outside, she looked very old, thin and spiritless, looked like an old lady, she was still a little delirious, and she kept saying that someone was going to persecute the chairman, but the things she said about that person were still things in the Yan'an period.

And He Zizhen was also stimulated by this meeting and fell seriously ill after returning to Shanghai. What she did not expect was that this meeting would be the last time the two would reunite.

In 1976, Chairman Mao's condition deteriorated. When their daughter Li Min learned that her father was seriously ill, she quickly left her job to visit her father in Zhongnan. At this time, Chairman Mao was already very weak, and after speaking with difficulty for a while, he made a gesture to his daughter Li Min: extending the thumb and index finger of his right hand, using the two fingertips of the fingers to face each other, forming a circle. Then Chairman Mao said a word, but because his voice was extremely low and weak, Li Min left before he could hear his father clearly.
Before Chairman Mao's death, Li Min had always been puzzled: It was not until many years later, when Li Min accidentally mentioned this gesture with a friend, after a friend's prompt, that she suddenly woke up to the fact that her father's gesture was to inquire about her mother He Zizhen's situation -- because He Zizhen's nickname was "Guiyuan".
Perhaps because of Jiang Qing, He Zizhen has not been to Beijing for many years since returning from the Soviet Union. In September 1979, He Zizhen first came to Beijing to visit Chairman Mao — September 9 was his death day.
He Zizhen came to the memorial hall and laid a wreath for the most important man in her life, and the daughter next to her looked at her mother's old back and the tears on the wreath - the name she silently left on the wreath was: "Comrade-in-arms He Zizhen".
Shortly after returning to Shanghai, He Zizhen's illness worsened, and he died in April 1984 at the age of 75.
