Williams' top 10 F1 drivers

The Williams team has endured more than four decades of ups and downs in F1, with 16 drivers joining the team to win the world championship.

This makes selecting the top 10 Williams F1 drivers a challenge.

For this list, the success of the drivers and Williams, their impact on the team and their time there are taken into account, which does not include their achievements in other teams.

Carlos Reutemann and Patrese were very close in the 10th seat, but the Italian got a chance to qualify for a longer time with the team and the four grands he won for Williams.

After nigel Mansell, who was injured at the 1987 Australian Grand Prix, came off the bench, Patres officially raced as Williams' driver in F1 the following season. The Judd-led FW12 wasn't Williams' classic and reliability was poor, but things started to get better when Renault engines arrived in 1989.

Patrese and new teammate Thierry Boutsen were evenly matched, both won the race, and in 1992 he had never been so comfortable with the FW14B with traction control and active suspension support. When Mansell swept the title with nine wins, Patrese won just one stop, narrowly defeating Michael Schumacher and Senna to win the title.

9. Ralph Schumacher

Williams Year: 1999-2004

Williams Wins: 6

One can sometimes forget how good Michael Schumacher's brother sometimes was to Williams, especially during his brilliant first F1 journey with the team in 1999.

Ralf has always been able to challenge the faster McLaren and Ferrari and unfortunately did not win the European Grand Prix.

In 2000, he beat impressive rookie Jensen Barton and won Williams' first Grand Prix victory in nearly four years at Imola the following season, one of three victories in 2001. His six wins made him the seventh most successful Williams F1 driver, more than any other non-champion driver.

It was difficult to separate Ralph Schumacher and Montoya into the list, but when the Colombian teamed up with Ralph, Montoya scored more points (221-173) and more pole positions (11-6), although the German won more Grand Prix wins (6-4).

Montoya is also more exciting, perhaps more akin to the driver Williams has always liked. He boldly overtook Michael Schumacher's Ferrari to win the 2001 Brazilian Grand Prix, his third F1 finish title.

Montoya often makes mistakes, but he's fast and aggressive. Ultimately, the Williams-BMW-Michelin-Montoya combination wasn't enough to stop Ferrari-Schumacher-Bridgestone, but it was closer to the two for most of the first half of the 2000s.

7. Jacques Villeneuve

Williams Year: 1996-98

Williams Wins: 11

Williams Titles: 1 (1997)

Perhaps ironically, Villeneuve's most impressive season at Williams was the one he was world champion. As a rookie in 1996, he struggled to support more experienced teammate Damon Hill, and before moving to BAR in 1998, FW20 had some outstanding performances that marked his end as the top car in F1.

His 1997 title was won in FW19, Williams' fourth ever driver's title in terms of raw speed.

Some bad luck, mistakes and wonderful rivalry for Ferrari's Michael Schumacher meant the title race was much closer than it should have been, but after the Ferrari driver deliberately hit the Williams car, Villeneuve won Williams' seventh drivers' title.

Williams Year: 1993

Williams won: 7

Williams Titles: 1 (1993)

Prost joined Williams after being sacked by Ferrari, and the team designed the dominant Williams-Renault combination in 1993. In terms of raw speed, the FW15C is the most dominant Williams ever.

He may not have been as aggressive or exciting as Mansell was on the same car, but Prost still finished with a 7-13 before retiring from F1 with a fourth world title in his pocket.

Williams Year: 1986-87

Williams Titles: 1 (1987)

Piquet joined Williams in 1986 with Mansell, arguably his best years. But Piquet felt that Frank Williams' serious traffic accident had led to his failure to become the team's number one driver...

The result was a duel of equal strength, although Williams won the team's championship and won nine of the 16 races this season. Rivalries between teammates continued in 1987, but after a serious crash in the practice session of the San Marino Grand Prix, Piquet was usually forced to play Mansell's wingman. However, when the Briton got into trouble, he could keep scoring and raiding.

Piquet won the title when Mansell suffered a back injury in qualifying at the Japan Grand Prix before moving to Lotus for F1 1988.

Williams wins: 5

Williams Titles: 1 (1982)

When Williams' favorite Alan Jones was shockingly retired in late 1981, Rosberg was a bravado improvist who could have been the perfect replacement. Rosberg crashed into a competitive car, and despite being a car with a Cosworth DFV engine to fight against the increasingly fast turbocharging crowd, Rosberg seized the opportunity.

The spectacular Rothberg won just one game on his way to the 1982 title, but in a season where no one has more than two wins, he's a title worth watching. By 1983, turbocharging technology did outpace DFV, but before Williams moved to Honda's power unit, Rosberg still had victories in monaco's tricky conditions.

The 1984 FW09 Honda was like a light switch and wasn't Williams' best car. Still, Rosberg won the 1984 Dallas Grand Prix.

FW10 is much better, which shows that Williams is a rising force. Rosberg scored his last F1 victory at the Australian Grand Prix before moving to McLaren in 1986, which was his last F1 race.

After becoming a formidable test driver, Hill became a teammate of the returning Prost, racing in 1993. He enhanced his driving skills at the right time to become the front-runner in driving the FW15C, winning three and finishing third in the table in his first full F1 season.

Senna replaced Prost in 1993 because williams lost most of its advantage over the competition when "little inventions" like traction control and active suspension were banned. That got FW16 tricky, with Hill being pushed into the role of captain in difficult circumstances when Senna was killed in the San Marino Grand Prix.

But both Hill and the team rebounded, FW16B made progress, and major rivals Michael Schumacher and Benetton were embroiled in various controversies.

Hill was often Schumacher's main challenger in 1995, but the team's and driver's mistakes meant Schumacher could easily win the title. The atmosphere inside the team also meant Williams decided to find someone to replace Hill in 1997.

Before that, however, Hill seized the final championship chance of FW18. Rookie teammate Villeneuve won the Japanese Grand Prix final, but in fact, Hill was the better driver in 1996, scoring eight wins and nine strokes in 16 rounds.

In the minds of team founders Frank Williams and Patrick Head, the outspoken Australian piloted the Head-designed FW06 in 1978.

In 1979, the reliability of the FW07 paid the price for him, but in the last six races, four victories paved the way for the team to win the championship in the second year of joining the team.

Jones scored five wins when he beat Brabham's Piquet to win the title, while also taking the constructors' championship that year.

The following year, despite Williams' loss to Piquet, he won the constructors' championship again, and Jones announced his retirement, where he was third in the standings that year.

Williams Year: 1985-88, 1991-92, 1994

Williams Wins: 28

Williams Titles: 1 (1992)

Mansell wasn't always the easiest driver to work with, but working at Williams seemed to inspire the best in britons. His 28 wins for the team put him on Williams' winning list to second-placed Hill.

After four years at Lotus, Mansell joined Williams with Rosberg, and in 1985, quickly became a threat. After winning the European Grand Prix at Brands Hatch, a second victory was immediately achieved in South Africa.

In 1986, Mansell won more than anyone else (five) with Piquet, but in the Adelaide finale the tyre burst and had to retire from the race, burying the title in hand.

Mansell set his goals again in 1987, but was troubled by misfortune. His qualifying accident in Suzuka took him out of the final two rounds, and although the Brazilian won only half of Mansell's victory, he guaranteed team-mate Piquet the title.

After working at Ferrari for two years and retiring from F1 for the first time, Mansell returned in 1991. After a tricky start with Patrese, Mansell proved for the team by challenging Senna to win the championship.

Mansell dominated the 1992 race with the FW14B, full of small inventions, with nine wins in 16 races.
