Recently, US media reported that China is suspected of secretly building an overseas military port in the UAE, and after many months of continuous efforts by senior US officials, the UAE finally stopped the project. The US media called the incident a "key diplomatic victory" achieved by the United States in competition with China. But is this really the case?
The place that the US media called "suspected to be a Chinese military port" is actually a port about 80 kilometers away from the UAE capital Abu Dhabi, called Khalifa Port. US media claimed that US officials learned of China's suspected construction of military facilities in the port this spring, and the US side was highly vigilant and launched related actions.
Previously, U.S. officials had been engaged in diplomatic representations with the UAE for months on end. White House national security adviser Sullivan also personally traveled to Abu Dhabi to learn about the port. Officials in the Biden administration responsible for middle eastern affairs have also traveled to Abu Dhabi to discuss the matter with the UAE crown prince, hoping that the UAE will halt the project.
After months of negotiations, the UAE finally halted the project, and the US media hyped it up, saying that it had "abolished a Chinese overseas military port" through diplomatic means.
But in fact, in order to get the UAE to halt this project, the United States not only made diplomatic efforts, but also promised the UAE a lot of benefits. The first is the previously stalled trade in F-35 fighter jets and MQ-9 Deathcraft between the United States and the United Arab Emirates, which the United States promised to restart.
Second, the United States has also signed a strategic cooperation agreement with the United Arab Emirates, which stipulates that when the United Arab Emirates is attacked, the United States needs to provide defense protection and support for the United Arab Emirates. Judging by the chips that the United States has come up with, they really want the Khalifa Port project to stop.
But a very critical question is: Is the facility being built in Khalifa Port really what the US media call a "Chinese military facility"?
For this problem, in fact, as long as you know what the United States has done before, you know that this is just a play directed and performed by the United States itself. First, the U.S. claims that Khalifa Port is building Chinese military facilities, but the evidence given is only that there is a large hole that can accommodate multi-storey buildings and girders, and the construction site has been covered.
But in fact, the port under construction at Khalifa Port is a joint venture between a Chinese company and the Abu Dhabi Port Authority. In December 2019, due to the rapid expansion of business, the port began to expand, and the expansion plan included two berths and a 37,000 square meter dock yard, so the so-called "big hole" in the United States is completely justified.
As for what the United States says about "the construction site was once covered", it is more normal, even if the construction site in general, for safety and other reasons, will often be covered, let alone such a large project.
Therefore, the United States suspects that the port is building Chinese military facilities and hypes "abolishing a Chinese overseas military port", which is just a big drama directed by itself to win over the UAE as an ally.
It is reported that due to the rising relations between the UAE and China in recent years, the United States has become increasingly uneasy about the UAE as an ally. Previously, the United States also suspended the arms sales contract between the two sides on the grounds that the United Arab Emirates may leak secrets to China.
Now the United States has directed and performed this drama, causing the UAE to stop the construction of normal commercial cooperation projects between China and Arab countries, which is obviously also to win over allies and damage China's international image, so as to achieve the purpose of containing China.
But this U.S. conspiracy is doomed to fail, just as the U.S. smeared China for building military facilities in Newport, Haifa, Israel, and will eventually prove to be just a normal commercial project. Moreover, as the country with the largest number of overseas military bases in the world, the United States has no position and qualifications to accuse other countries of building overseas military bases.
