Most people's first impression of Shanghai is the magic capital. In fact, the devil is not only modern, but also the calm and comfortable Jiangnan water town. On the coast of the East China Sea and the southwest corner of Shanghai, there is a hidden and low-key thousand-year-old town - Zhangyan. Unlike the hustle and bustle of the city, it is quiet and leisurely, and time seems to slow down here.
Zhangyan, one of the top ten "Chinese historical and cultural towns" in Shanghai, has been gathered into a village as early as the Spring and Autumn Period, and when haiyan County was established in the Qin Dynasty, Zhangyan Town was also subordinate to the county. During the Western Han Dynasty, the founding hero Zhang Liang once lived here in seclusion, and Zhang Yan's "Zhang" got its name. The Tang Dynasty set up Huating Eighteen Weirs to resist the tide, one of which was Zhangjing Weir, from which the "weir" of Zhangyan was derived.
Historically, Zhangyan was once known as the "First Town of Punan" because of its profound cultural heritage and developed commercial and trade transportation.
In the Qing Dynasty, the famous Wang family had the reputation of "one door and four scholars, two shangshu in the same room" in Zhangyan. Wang Guangxin and his three sons Wang Hongxu, Wang Jiuling, and Wang Xiangling not only successively became jinshi, but two of his sons later became Shangshu. At the end of the Qing Dynasty and the beginning of the People's Republic, the modern poet Gao Tianmei, Chen Quyi, Liu Yazi and others founded a literary revolutionary group that had influenced the course of Modern and Contemporary Chinese history, nanshe. Yao Guang, the director of the late Nanshe Society, was the backbone of the Nanshe when it was founded, and co-founded the "Guoxue Business Exchange Association" with Gao Tianmei, Gao Chuiwan, Liu Yazi and others.
Zhang Yan also has well-known personalities such as the French painter Bai Banana, the famous Chinese medicine master Gan Zuwang, the founder of modern astronomy Gao Pingzi, the Nobel Prize winner in physics, And so on, who have made important contributions to China's economic and social development and even human civilization.
Ancient buildings are repaired as old as before, reproducing cultural memory
Zhangyan Town has a 1,100-year-old historical landscape protection area. Within the scope of this historical style protection area, Yao Guang's former residence, Qian Family Ancestral Hall, Qian Pei Famous House, Lu Family Ancestral Hall, Zou Ma Lou, Bai Banana Former Residence, Wan Mei Hua Lu and other mansions and ancestral halls that reflect the architectural characteristics of Zhangyan Water Town are all over the place.
Since 2015, Zhangyan Town has launched the project of protecting and repairing the ancient buildings of the Historical Landscape Protection Area, spending tens of millions of yuan to repair nine sets of ancient buildings, including the Lu Family Ancestral Hall, Yao Guang's Former Residence, Huaxian Road No. 29, etc., with a construction area of more than 6,700 square meters, laying a solid foundation for the next step of ancient town development.

Ancient buildings are alive and readable. How to revitalize ancient buildings, the party committee and government of Zhangyan Town have their own thinking. "Zhangyan is not only a famous historical and cultural town in China, but also a cultural and educational town, we do not do mass tourism, our ancient buildings have been repaired and mainly introduced some cultural and creative projects, through the holding of painting exhibitions, cultural visits, seminars and exchanges and other activities, to further enhance the cultural height of Zhangyan." Shi Wenquan, secretary of the party committee of Zhangyan Town, said.
Nowadays, the protection and development of ancient buildings in Zhangyan Town has embarked on a different path from commercialization, and ancient buildings have gradually "awakened" after injecting new cultural elements.
Former residence of Yao Guang
Located at No. 139 Xinhua Road, Yao Guang's former residence was the former residence of Yao Guang, the second director of nanshe, and also an important place for communication, meetings and exchanges between people of Nanshe at that time. In view of the deep historical relationship between Mr. Yao Guang and Nanshe, in May 2007, the Jinshan District Party Committee and the District Government officially established the "Shanghai Nanshe Memorial Hall" based on the "Former Residence of Yao Guang". In April 2010, the memorial hall was created as a national AAA-level tourist attraction. The memorial hall currently has two basic exhibitions: "Nanshe Historical Materials Exhibition" and "Yao Guang's Former Residence Exhibition".

Lu Family Ancestral Hall
Since 2015, when Zhangyan Town started the protection and repair of ancient buildings, the Lu Family Ancestral Hall has been renovated. In 2016, shanghai overseas Chinese calligraphy and painting institute and Shanghai maritime calligraphy and painting institute settled in Lu family ancestral hall. Relying on the calligraphy and painting inheritance platform, Zhangyan Town, Together with the Shanghai Overseas Chinese Calligraphy and Painting Institute, the Shanghai Maritime Calligraphy and Painting Institute, and the Jinshan Youth Activity Center, jointly organized the "Chinese Painting Teenager" Chinese Painting Selection Competition, and signed a contract with the Jinshan District Education Bureau and the Shanghai Overseas Chinese Calligraphy and Painting Institute to jointly build the Youth Chinese Painting Academy to further promote the development of youth aesthetic education.

29 Huaxian Road
The ancient building at No. 29 Huaxian Road was built in the late Qing and early Ming dynasties. In 2019, Zhangyan Town cooperated with the Cultural and Tourism Bureau to promote the construction of the Baijiao Art Museum. On November 3, 2020, the Bai banana art museum at No. 29 Huaxian Road was officially opened. Combined with the works of white banana calligraphy and painting collected by the Jinshan District Museum over the years and the recent donations of the descendants of the white banana, the art museum focuses on his artistic achievements in poetry, calligraphy, painting, seal carving and other aspects.
"A thousand-year-old town, a hundred years of turmoil". Once, Yao Guang's former residence was stationed in the Nanshe Memorial Hall, the Lu Family Ancestral Hall was stationed in the Shanghai Overseas Chinese Calligraphy and Painting Institute and the Shanghai Maritime Calligraphy and Painting Institute, Qian Pei's famous residence was stationed in the Zhu Penggao Art Museum, and No. 29 Huaxian Road was stationed in the Bai banana art museum... Many ancient buildings in Zhangyan Town have ushered in a "new owner" and become a new cultural landmark in the ancient town. At present, Yunshan Lou is preparing for the work of The Historical and Cultural Customs Museum of Zhangyan Town, and after opening, it will become an external display window for Zhangyan's profound historical and cultural heritage and local humanistic customs and folklore. In the future, Zhangyan Town will continue to follow the development path of "culture + ancient town", inject new cultural connotations into ancient buildings, and make Zhangyan Town a "cultural benchmark" in Shanghai Jinshan.
