Billy Meredith was a Welsh player who played on the right wing and played for Welsh at the beginning of his football career, but his talent was noticed by Manchester City at the time in the Second Division, and he was invited to join, which resulted in him leaving his hometown and moving to Manchester. Soon Billy Meredith became the team's main force, and in addition to becoming the team's top scorer, he was also appointed captain. His contributions included assisting the team in its promotion to the First Division in 1899. Originally, his development at Manchester City was very good, but one thing happened that changed the fate of Billy Meredith.

In 1905, Billy Meredith tried to bribe Aston Villa captain Alex Leake to play a match-fixing, and although Alex Lick did not accept the bribe, it still happened in the east window, resulting in Billy Meredith being banned from the FA for a year. City refused to pay Billy Meredith for fear of being punished by the FA, so he asked to leave the squad.
