Jiang Tao, male, was born in October 1963 in Huaibei City, Anhui Province. Professor of Central South University, recipient of the National Science Foundation for Outstanding Young Scholars. In 2021, he was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

He has long been engaged in the research of ferrous metal mineral resources pooling finishing and short-process metallurgy, and has made outstanding contributions to the high-quality development of China's steel industry and the green and low-carbon transformation. He has won 3 national science and technology awards, 8 first prizes of the province and ministry, published 8 monographs and manuals, published 370 papers, authorized 90 national invention patents, built an academic team with greater influence at home and abroad, and won the Hunan Provincial Innovation Team Award.

The steel industry is a pillar industry for the development of the national economy. How to provide high-quality concentrates for China's steel smelting under the condition of the world's most complex and difficult iron-containing raw materials, and achieve efficient and low-consumption clean steel production, Jiang Tao has been adhering to it for 38 years.

In the summer of 1979, Jiang Tao received an acceptance letter from the Zhongnan Mining and Metallurgical College (now Central South University) majoring in mining. At that time, the popularity of this major was low, and no one around him even knew about it, but Jiang Tao firmly believed that "since the school has established this major, it must be the need of the country." In this way, he came to the school from Huaibei to report, and since then he has embarked on the road of providing "refined food" for China's steel industry.

In the early stage of reform and opening up, China used the strength of the whole country to build a modern steel joint enterprise - Baosteel to meet the needs of the rapid development of the national economy. In 1985, Jiang Tao, who was studying for graduate school, came here for the first time to visit and study, and the large-scale project and the hot construction scene deeply touched his heart and strengthened his determination to contribute to the steel cause of the motherland.

To develop the steel industry, raw materials are the foundation and concentrates are the key. However, more than 97% of China's iron ore is a low-grade refractory resource, and the imported ore is large in scale, variety and fluctuation, and the concentrate production technology was very backward at that time. Sintering is a major concentrate preparation method, and the high material layer is an effective way to sinter with high efficiency and low consumption, but the uneven quality and decreased yield after the material height exceeds 700mm is a worldwide problem.

After more than 20 years of returning from Baosteel, Jiang Tao and his colleagues began to tackle the key problems, and after more than 20 years, developed the ultra-high material layer homothermal sintering technology and key equipment, gradually increased the height of the material layer to more than 900mm, and the technology reached the international advanced level. After the successful implementation of this technology in Baosteel, it was quickly promoted and applied in most steel enterprises across the country, realized the upgrading of sintering technology, and made important contributions to solving the problem of "eating enough" in China's steel industry.

In 2003, Jiang Tao returned from a study tour abroad. At that time, China's demand for steel was in a new stage of starting from "eating enough" to "eating well", and the demand for stainless steel increased rapidly, but China's stainless steel production raw material laterite nickel ore all relied on imports, and the problem of large energy consumption and high cost was very prominent. Faced with new challenges, Jiang Tao led the team to launch a new charge.

I don't know how many nights I stayed up all night, and I don't know how many experiments I did. After 15 years, Jiang Tao and his team have finally overcome a series of key technologies, innovated the existing ore thermoelectric furnace smelting nickel iron technology, reduced the electricity consumption of nickel iron by 600 degrees, and successfully developed a new process for low-temperature and low-cost preparation of nickel iron, reducing production costs by more than 30%, providing technical support for the sustainable development of China's stainless steel industry.

Low-carbon green production is the strategic direction of steel development, and the short process of electric furnace with scrap steel as the main raw material is an important way to achieve low-carbon green development. Direct reduced iron is an ideal impurity diluent for electric furnace smelting scrap, but China's direct reduced iron production is almost blank. Since the 1990s, Jiang Tao and his team have started from the development of new binders, invented a new method for preparing direct reduced iron at high temperature, and promoted the start of China's direct reduced iron production and the development of short processes in electric furnaces.

Scientific research and education, moral tree people, Jiang Tao never forget the mission of being a teacher. Over the past 30 years, he has insisted on teaching undergraduates, training more than 100 masters, doctors and postdoctoral fellows, most of whom have become the backbone of teaching and scientific research, and many of them have been selected for the national talent program. After years of hard work, the innovation team he has established has become an important force for the rapid, high-quality development and green and low-carbon transformation of China's steel industry.

Professor Li Guanghui, a key member of Jiang Tao's team and the School of Resource Processing and Biological Engineering of Central South University, said: "Teachers are easy to get, but teachers are difficult to find. Teacher Jiang's incomparable loyalty to the country, excellence in science, and strict kindness to students inspire us to keep moving forward. ”
