Recent winners include Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk and Mohammed Salah, although Manchester City midfielder Kevin de Bruen has picked up bronze medals in two consecutive seasons over the past two seasons.

This time, all of these players are expected to play again, but they will also face competition from the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Bernardo Silva and Phil Foden.

Mohamed Salah so far this season has simply been breathtaking, with the Liverpool striker having scored 10 goals after 11 games – three more than any other player in the league.

Salah has already won the award once and if he can stay that way, he will continue to look for another batch of individual trophies – as well as a Premier League title that in the early stages of the season it looks like a very open game.

Throughout his career at Anfield, Salah has maintained a consistency rarely found in such a high level of league, but it's fair to say that so far he has taken his performance to a new level – can he still keep up for six months to win a trophy?

In terms of odds, it's no surprise that Mohammed Salah has so much of an advantage that every Premier League player has plenty of time to fight, and it's no surprise to see more odds in other important title contenders.

Phil Foden is still the best player of His Career at City and he will face stiff competition from other teams, such as Kevin de Brunn and Bernardo Silva, after which he will even consider players from other teams.

Evergreen Cristiano Ronaldo could have played if he continued to leave a stumbling Manchester United side in the top four, while Declan Rice represented West Ham's bold start.

If Declan Rice and the Hammer continue to fly high in the table, he can be considered one of the dark horses, and Chelsea's Romelu Lukaku can also be considered if he can find that goal format that will allow him to become Serie A champions with Inter Milan last season.

There are many more Manchester City and Liverpool stars also being identified as one of them, including Citizen's £100 million Jack Gressish signed in the summer, and Reds centre-back Virgil van Diejk, another former winner.

While neither has been at their best this season, Bruno Fernandez and Harry Kane are both capable of competing for the trophy if they can play alongside Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount in the coming weeks and months.
