author:Qian Yue said history

In the history of China, there have been many emperors who have changed the law and tried to become stronger, and the one who can toss the most is Wang Mang, the new emperor between the two Han Dynasties. In the first year of the first year (8 years), Wang Mang accepted the Zen concession of his widow (Liu Bao), ascended the throne as emperor, and changed the name of the country to "Xin". Since then, under the banner of "Togu reform," all-round social reforms have been carried out, and unprecedented major reforms have been carried out over the field system, the currency system, the official system, the official name, and the place name.

Strange administrative division reform in Wang Mang's period: pit miserable officials and people, more pit bitter Ban Gu Yongzhou: Yuzhou: Hezhou: Youzhou Jizhou: Yanzhou: Qingzhou Xuzhou Yangzhou Jingzhou: Yizhou Jiaozhou Bibliography:

Most of these policies belong to the whimsical fantasies, it is difficult to be grounded, the people did not benefit from them, they suffered first, and at the same time they changed their orders and orders, so that the people's officials did not know what to do, aroused the strong dissatisfaction of the nobles and commoners, and the popularity accumulated before usurping the throne was quickly destroyed. So that only fifteen years after the establishment of the new Mang regime, it collapsed under the blows of the peasant uprising.

The reform of geographical names contributed significantly to the downfall of the new Mang regime. Wang Mang's reform of place names began in the first five years (5 years) of becoming a "false emperor", and after several years of hard work, he finally changed the names of more than 100 counties in the country, and the county names of more than 1,500 counties were also changed by more than half. Chang'an, the capital city of Chang'an, was renamed Chang'an when he ascended the throne, which was really a basic exercise for Wang Mang, and there was no need to make a fuss. It is really Wang Mang's toponymic reform, and there are too many strange points:

1. Add a protective layer to both the east and the west. On the Chang'an side, at the same time as changing JingzhaoYin to Jingzhao County, based on the three auxiliaries, Jingwei County, Shiwei County, Yiwei County, Guangwei County, Fuwei County, and Liewei County, these six major wei counties, firmly protected Jingzhao County. In the eastern capital of Luoyang, Henan County was changed to Baozhong xinqing, and the former eastern part of Henan County was divided into Qisan County, Hongnong County was changed to right team county, Yingchuan County was changed to left team county, Hedong County was changed to Zhao team county, Hanoi County was changed to rear team county, Nanyang County was changed to front team county, and six team county was used to guard Bao Zhongxinqing.

2. Be good at using antonyms. Fuli County in Pei County was renamed Asahi County, and Wuxi County in Huijian County was renamed Youxi County, and it is not known whether Wuxi produced tin after the name change.

3. Change the name of a place, and then transfer the original name to another administrative district of the same level nearby. Zhangye County was renamed Shiping County, and the nearby Wuwei County was changed to Zhangye County; Jinan County was changed to Le'an County, and Qi County was changed to Jinan County; Lecheng County in Hejian State was changed to Luxin County; and Gonggao County in the same county was changed to Lecheng County. This kind of mysterious operation is really confusing.

4. Xu Is Wang Mang's avoidance of certain words, so he changed the place names with these words on a large scale. As a former dynasty of the Han Dynasty, the word "Han" naturally could not appear in place names, so all "Han" were artificially erased, and many were changed to "new"; "Ling" and "Lin" were also in the revised list, such as Baling changed to Water Chapter; Duling changed to Rao'an; and the word "Lin" was often replaced by "supervisor". Others on this list include the word "襄".

5. Change a large number of single-word counties to double-word counties.

6, the name change is quite arbitrary. For the name of a country's administrative division, a large-scale change is enough, but Wang Mang is quite indifferent to this, many place names have been changed again and again, and some place names have even been changed five times a year, and finally changed back to the original.

Strange administrative division reform in Wang Mang's period: pit miserable officials and people, more pit bitter Ban Gu Yongzhou: Yuzhou: Hezhou: Youzhou Jizhou: Yanzhou: Qingzhou Xuzhou Yangzhou Jingzhou: Yizhou Jiaozhou Bibliography:

This kind of bottomless operation made the place names in the New Mang period panic, and the officials and people could not remember the new names at all, so every time an edict and official document were issued, they needed to note the old name after the new name. This move not only affects efficiency and causes a large waste of administrative resources, but also makes the officials and people deeply resentful and psychologically extremely resistant. Therefore, after the establishment of the Eastern Han Dynasty, the Guangwu Emperor Liu Xiu complied with the will of the people and changed the place name back.

Historians, along with the "Shi Ji", called the "Book of Han" author Ban Gu, who also called the first four histories, are another representative of a group that was troubled by Wang Mang's toponymic reform. According to the principle of revision of history, it is necessary to write clearly the geographical evolution and changes in the geographical history of a place. As the initiator of the Geographical Chronicle, the Book of Han needs to explain the history clearly. However, Wang Mang was really good at tossing, so Ban Gu marked eight or nine hundred places before and after, which almost doubled his workload.

Tan Qijun's "Historical Atlas of China" is the most authoritative monograph on China's historical map at present, but unfortunately it does not include the strange national political district map of the Xinmang period. Therefore, taking Tan Lao's "Historical Atlas of China and Western Han Scrolls" as the base map, and referring to Tan Lao's "Examination of the New Mang's Occupation" and "Hanshu • Geographical History", a map of the administrative divisions of the Xinmang period was produced for details.

Note: 1. Because there are too many place names that have been changed, the base map cannot be put down, so only the changes in county-level place names are included on the map. 2. The county-level place name is attached to the map, the former is the original place name of the Western Han Dynasty - the latter is the place name changed by Wang Mang.
