Recently, when the staff of Jiulian Mountain Nature Reserve in Ganzhou City, Jiangxi Province, carried out field patrols, they found a special butterfly, which was identified by experts as a corrugated eye butterfly, which is also a new record species of butterflies in Jiangxi Province.
The corrugated eye butterfly is a genus of butterflies in the family Pterophoridae, with gray-brown fronts, multiple corrugated lines, and a row of eye-like spots on the outer edges of both wings, the inner half is orange yellow, the outer half is black, and surrounded by white circles. The butterfly is currently mainly distributed in Hainan, Guangdong, Guangxi, Yunnan, Taiwan and other southern provinces in China, the discovery of the butterfly, once again enriched the species diversity of jiulian mountain nature reserve, as of now, the number of butterfly species in the reserve has reached 295 species.
Wang Hui, a ranger at the Daqiutian Conservation Station in Jiangxi Jiulianshan National Nature Reserve, told reporters that they stumbled upon this butterfly during a recent inspection. Based on the jagged outer edge of its hindwings and the eye-like spots on the front of its wings, they tentatively determined that it belonged to a subfamily of ocular butterflies in the family Butterflyidae. After further comparison, it was determined that it was a rippled eye butterfly.
Ranger Wang Hui: After determining that it is a corrugated eye butterfly, we consulted a large number of literature, including the provincial insect list, the insect list of various nature reserves in Jiangxi Province, and the comprehensive scientific investigation report, etc. After reviewing and comparing, we found that there is no record of this insect in other parts of Jiangxi Province, which can be determined to be a new record species in Jiangxi Province.
Jiulianshan National Nature Reserve is located in Longnan City, Jiangxi Province, on the border of Gansu and Guangdong, belonging to the core area of the eastern part of Nanling, with a forest coverage rate of 94.7%, extremely rich biodiversity, preserving a large area of native evergreen broad-leaved forest, known as "biological resource gene bank", "source of the Ganjiang River", is a green treasure house in the east of Nanling.
Wang Hui introduced that in recent years, they have found more than 500 new species of animals and plants in the Jiulian Mountain Reserve, of which 5 are new (material) species, including the subspecies of the butterfly and the Jiulian Mountain horned toad named after jiulian mountain. This shows that the ecological environment of Jiulian Mountain Nature Reserve is getting better and better, the biodiversity is improving day by day, and the conservation effect is more significant, on the other hand, it also provides important value for scientific research in related fields.
