Lu Xun and Mr. Fujino: After 29 years of separation, they had a chance to meet, but Fujino refused

author:Reporter Li Man

"Yankuro Fujino" is the protagonist of Mr. Fujino's text "Mr. Fujino" that Mr. Lu Xun selected to enter the middle school textbook: Mr. Fujino, who was Lu Xun's mentor when he attended sendai Medical College in Japan.

In 1935, a year before Lu Xun's death, when the "Lu Xun Anthology" was about to be published in the Japanese Iwanami Bunko Library, Masuda Shigeru, a student of Lu Xun who was in charge of the selection of articles, and the Japanese poet Haruo Sato asked him what articles he would choose. Lu Xun's answer was "everything is arbitrary", but he continued: "It is necessary to include "Mr. Fujino" in it." ”

Lu Xun especially proposed that he hope that the year of his collection of "Mr. Fujino" has passed, and 30 years have passed since he abandoned the medical profession and bid farewell to Mr. Fujino's class. At this time, Lu Xun had become a very famous writer in China.

The reason why Lu Xun is so obsessed with Mr. Fujino is naturally because he once had a special teacher-student relationship with Mr. Fujino.

Lu Xun and Mr. Fujino: After 29 years of separation, they had a chance to meet, but Fujino refused

When Lu Xun was studying in Sendai, it was the time when he was most confused, when he was studying in Japan, he had just finished his studies at Hongwen Academy. The reason why Lu Xun entered Sendai to study medicine, he himself once expounded in "Chao Hua Xi Shi": All because his father was deceived by a "famous doctor" in his illness, he was inspired to learn good medical skills, so as to cure diseases and save people.

It was also for this reason that Lu Xun came to the school where Mr. Fujino taught and became his student. Mr. Fujino's appearance is the appearance of a standard Japanese, and Lu Xun once described his appearance in an article:

"At that time came a thin black gentleman, with a figure-eight beard, wearing glasses, carrying a stack of books large and small. As soon as he put the book on the podium, he introduced himself to the students in a slow and very frustrated tone: "I am named Fujino Yankuro...""

Mr. Fujino was taking an anatomy class at that time, and he was very friendly to Lu Xun, the only "Qingguo student" in the class, and in Lu Xun's impression, he was always particularly kind to himself, and he even took Lu Xun's lecture notes and made extremely detailed annotations. In Lu Xun's article "Mr. Fujino", Lu Xun described the lecture notes that Mr. Fujino had annotated him:

When I took it down and opened it, I was taken aback, but at the same time I felt a sense of uneasiness and gratitude. It turned out that my lecture notes had been changed with red pen from beginning to end, not only adding many omissions, but also correcting grammatical errors one by one. ”

Lu Xun's lecture notes corrected by Mr. Fujino

Originally, the teacher's careful annotation of the students' lecture notes was not particularly gratifying, but because Lu Xun was in Japan at that time, and he was still a weak student who was always looked down upon, he could not avoid feeling that What Mr. Fujino did was "great kindness".

When you are in the dark, even a very small light you give can illuminate the entire night sky. At that time, Mr. Fujino's red annotation to Lu Xun's lecture notes was like a light, illuminating the world of Lu Xun, who was treated coldly in a foreign country.

The one thing that impressed Lu Xun the most by Mr. Fujino was probably the fact that he "quelled the rumors" for him.

On one exam, Lu Xun got a fairly good score in anatomy. Because he was an international student from a weak country, the Japanese students were very unconvinced, so they spread rumors that "he must have read the lecture notes leaked by Mr. Fujino beforehand" before he got a high score.

In order to insult Lu Xun, they not only wrote an anonymous letter to scold him, but also specially wrote "Please do not miss it when you meet at the same level", and added a circle next to the word "leak" to satirize Lu Xun's fraud.

And the reason why they think Lu Xun plagiarized is nothing more than because Lu Xun is an international student in a weak country. Lu Xun himself once said this when describing the reasons why they slandered him:

"China is a weak country, so of course Chinese is low-energy, and if the score is above sixty, it is not their own ability: no wonder they are confused."

After being slandered, Lu Xun, who had a strong sense of self-esteem, immediately told Mr. Fujino about the matter, and with the help of Fujino and his classmates, the rumor was finally eliminated.

Lu Xun was a very grateful man, and he was full of gratitude to Mr. Fujino for giving him all kinds of care and help in that situation.

Therefore, decades later, in 1926, Lu Xun, who had long ceased to study medicine, could still clearly recall those details and write them in "Mr. Fujino". Lu Xun also specifically mentioned in the text that Mr. Fujino gave him a small portrait when they were separated, and until Lu Xun died, the small statue of Mr. Fujino with the word "Farewell" written on the back was still hung on the wall of the study.

It is also because Mr. Fujino was kind to Lu Xun, so when he abandoned the doctor and followed the text, he felt sorry for his teacher. On the other hand, he was also very dissatisfied with his anatomy course results, bluntly saying "Unfortunately, I didn't use my skills at that time", and it is not difficult to hear from Lu Xun's words that "bad grades" also made him feel "ashamed" of his mentor.

Lu Xun's "conscious guilt" is actually the result of his great value for Mr. Fujino.

Lu Xun loved the medical teacher Mr. Fujino, but resolutely abandoned the reason behind the medical practice, he elaborated in the article "Mr. Fujino", this reason, his second brother Zhou Zuoren also once told in "Lu Xun's Youth", he said:

"The most important [reason] was watching the films of the Russo-Japanese War, where Chinese who inquired about the Russian army were seized and executed by the Japanese army, and there were still many Chinese standing around to watch. What a great stimulus this gave him (Lu Xun)! The people in the film, the people who were killed and the people who watched the killing have very healthy bodies, but what is the use of this? There is only a good body, and if something is missing, it still doesn't work. When he thought about it, he felt that his previous desire to study medicine was wrong. What path should be taken to save the country..."

From this passage, it can be seen that the result of Lu Xun's abandonment of medicine and obedience to literature is actually the inevitable result of his awakening. But after making the "inevitable" choice, Lu Xun still had a hint of hesitation in his heart, and this hesitation naturally came from his mentor Mr. Fujino.

Nearly 30 years later, the hesitation of the past has become like a knot in his heart, so much so that he often thinks of Mr. Fujino, who has never been able to contact him. In the article, he once described his knot like this:

"But somehow, I always remember him, and among the teachers I think I am, he is the one that makes me most grateful and encourages me..."

Later, this knot slowly became Lu Xun's spiritual power, and in "Mr. Fujino", he had this description of this power:

"Only his photograph still hangs on the east wall of my Beijing apartment, across from the desk. Whenever I was tired at night and wanted to be lazy, I caught a glimpse of his dark and thin face in the light on my back, and seemed to be about to say something depressing, so that I suddenly found my conscience again, and I increased my courage, so I lit a cigarette and continued to write some words that were deeply hated by the likes of the 'upright gentleman'. ”

Then, is Mr. Fujino, who Lu Xun values so much, still "obsessed" decades later, just like Lu Xun did to him? After separating from Lu Xun, what did Mr. Fujino experience? To solve the answers to these questions, you have to find Lu Xun's former medical classmate Shigeo Kobayashi.

Shigeo Kobayashi, a classmate of Lu Xun's at sendai Medical College, later became a doctor of medicine. During his school days, he and Lu Xun had a good relationship, so after graduation, they occasionally exchanged letters.

Shigeo Kobayashi once published a "report card" of Lu Xun's promotion examination in the spring of 1905 that he kept, and the results of Lu Xun's various subjects listed on the list were: Anatomy 59.3, Organization 73.7, Physiology 63.3, Ethics 83, German 60, Chemistry 60, and Physics 60.

Judging from the transcript saved by Shigeo Kobayashi, Lu Xun had an average score of 65.5 in 7 homework, ranking 68th among 142 people, a proper middle school student.

After Lu Xun's death, Shigeo Kobayashi also did something related to Lu Xun, he wrote a special letter to Mr. Fujino, in which he described Lu Xun in detail, and he also specially translated Lu Xun's "Mr. Fujino" into Japanese and sent it to Mr. Fujino.

At this time, Mr. Fujino was no longer a medical teacher at a university, he was a sitting doctor at a clinic in the countryside of Fukui Prefecture, his hometown, and his daily work was to treat poor people in the vicinity.

After Learning of Mr. Fujino's current situation, Shigeo Kobayashi realized: No wonder he and Lu Xun and other classmates could not find him everywhere, and it turned out that he had gone to the countryside in seclusion to sit in the clinic.

So how did Mr. Fujino go from being a "college medical teacher" to a country clinic doctor? The answer to this question is actually in Lu Xun's article "Mr. Fujino".

Many of the details revealed in Lu Xun's article show that Mr. Fujino has a "pro-China tendency", if not, why would he take the initiative to clarify Lu Xun's test results when he was slandered for cheating his test results?

Chinese still believe that Mr. Fujino has a "pro-China tendency", and the Japanese are even more so. It is precisely for this reason that after the outbreak of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the emergence of China and Japan as enemy countries, he suffered great controversy because of his "pro-China tendencies." At its worst, his eldest son was like him.

Soon after sendai Medical College was incorporated into Tohoku Imperial University, Mr. Fujino was dismissed from his post due to lack of qualifications. He then had to go to Tokyo to study clinical surgery, and eventually fell into the situation of opening a clinic in the countryside.

Lu Xun resides in Sendai

After Shigeo Kobayashi's letter was delivered to Mr. Fujino, he was full of emotions, and that night, he wrote a reply to Shigeo Kobayashi with a pen.

In the reply, Mr. Fujino once again recalled the story of Lu Xun and himself, and he also talked about the reasons behind his exceptionally good treatment of Lu Xun, he said:

"When I was a teenager, I asked Mr. Nosaka, who had come to sakai Domain, for advice on Chinese, and I felt that in addition to respecting the sages of China, I also had to value the people over there... Don't ask what kind of person Zhou Jun is, before and after that time, the foreign students happened to be only Zhou Jun. So it's true that you can help find an apartment, down to the rules of talking, and do your best to help. ”

From This passage of Mr. Fujino's words, it can be seen that Mr. Fujino really "attaches great importance" to the people over there (Chinese), which is also the reason behind his special concern for Lu Xun.

He also pointed out in particular that his kindness to Lu Xun was not actually aimed at him personally, but that he was using a good way to express his respect for this "morally advanced country" from China. He wrote:

"It is not known that this is a special product of the country, but it seems that it is not shallow and infuriating by the Confucianism of the neighboring country, so it is not a special consideration for the advanced countries of morality, not for the individual people of Zhou Jun."

From this passage, it can also be seen that Mr. Fujino does have a "pro-China tendency", and the reason why he is like this is also explained in the aforementioned letter: "When I was a teenager, I admired the sages of China because of my Chinese, and then I attached great importance to people from China. ”

But although Mr. Fujino said so, it is also true that he has unusual feelings for his student Lu Xun. According to the characteristics of human nature of "the more you pay, the more you love", Mr. Fujino, who has done so much for Lu Xun, must have a deep affection for Lu Xun. This was later confirmed by his nephew Fujino Tsunesaburo.

Fujino Henzaburo once told a small story that no one knew, he said:

"In the year of Lu Xun's death, a reporter brought a photo of Lu Xun's death to my uncle Yan Jiulang. At this time, my uncle learned the news of Lu Xun's death, when Yan Jiulang was sitting on his stomach, holding the photo above his head, and then taking up a pen and writing 'Remember Zhou Shurenjun'."

Photograph of Lu Xun at the time of his death

Although this passage is white, it undoubtedly depicts Mr. Fujino's deep friendship with Lu Xun.

Later, Mr. Fujino also wrote a special article called "Remembering Zhou Shurenjun" to mourn Lu Xun. Through the words in the text, the world found that the Japanese Mr. Fujino knew Lu Xun very well, and it was precisely because he understood that he was quite aware of the situation of Lu Xun, who was a student of a weak country, and he once wrote in a reminiscent tone:

"Zhou Jun came to Japan just after the Sino-Japanese War. Although many years have passed since the Sino-Japanese War, unfortunately, there was still a custom in society at that time that the Japanese people called Chinese 'braided monks' and said bad things about Chinese. Therefore, there is also such a group of people at the Sendai Medical College who look at Zhou Jun with blank eyes and regard him as an alien. ”

It is not difficult to imagine that Mr. Fujino, when he wrote these words, must have been filled with sympathy for Lu Xun's situation. From this, it can be seen that Mr. Fujino has a kind of "hero cherishes hero" for Lu Xun.

Mr. Fujino, who had a crush on Lu Xun, had actually received news from Lu Xun long before Lu Xun's death, and had seen the article "Mr. Fujino".

It turned out that as early as 1935, when Mr. Fujino was 61 years old, he learned about Lu Xun's recent situation through his son Fujino Hengya, who was studying in high school.

One day that year, when Hengmi was out of school, his Chinese teacher stopped him and handed him a copy of Lu Xun's anthology:

"This is a collection of essays by the great Chinese writer Lu Xun, and there is an article written by a man named Fujino Yanjiulang, the same as your father's name. You take it back and ask if your father is him. ”

After taking it back, Hemi gave the book to his father according to the teacher's instructions, and Mr. Fujino saw his self 30 years ago in the article "Mr. Fujino". He also knew through the article that this Chinese student he had helped and loved had treasured his lecture notes but lost them, and the following is the specifics of Lu Xun's account of this period:

"The lecture notes he corrected, which I have once bound into three thick copies and collected, will serve as a permanent memorial. Unfortunately, when I moved to the house seven years ago, I destroyed a book box and lost half a box of books, and it happened that this handout was also lost. ”

Heng mi once said in his later memories that when his father read the text, his eyes were tearful, and he also took a magnifying glass to look at the photo of Lu Xun at the beginning of the volume and said: "It is really Zhou Jun!"

Lu Xun took a photo when he studied in Japan

But what puzzled Heng Mi was that after closing the book, his father remained silent, and after a while, he slowly said, "It was me who wrote it." But don't tell anyone. ”

Although Heng mi did not understand the reason for his father's words, he obediently did not tell anyone else, he only told the truth to the Chinese teacher, and asked the teacher not to tell others. Soon after the incident, Hengmi's Chinese teacher took the initiative to visit Mr. Fujino, and the two talked for a long time, and after leaving, the teacher never mentioned anything to anyone else.

Fujino only read the article and knew that his Zhou Jun missed him very much, but he did not know at the time: Lu Xun had been looking for him for countless years.

The truth of all this was learned after receiving a letter from his student Shigeo Kobayashi, and at this time, Lu Xun had passed away. Shigeo Kobayashi told him in the letter:

"He (Lu Xun) misses you very much, he has been looking for you, he has been looking for you, he has always wanted to see you, even if he can see your descendants."

When he saw this passage written by Shigeo Kobayashi, Mr. Fujino's heart was full of remorse. Originally, he also thought about meeting Lu Xun, but when he thought that he was already a great writer and that he was only a remote rural earner, he hesitated. Another reason why Mr. Fujino refused to see Lu Xun was that he did not understand literature, and he was afraid that he and Lu Xun, who had long given up medicine, did not have a common topic.

Regarding fujino's psychological activities, after learning of Lu Xun's death, he once had a long account, saying:

"If I had contacted Zhou Jun earlier, how happy Zhou Jun would have been." But now nothing has helped, which is a pity. After I retired, I lived in a remote rural area, and I didn't know much about the outside world, especially literature. ”

From this description by Mr. Fujino, it can be seen that after the situation became bad, he had a deep inferiority complex in his heart. He even felt that his current identity was no longer appropriate to meet the great literary scholar Lu Xun.

Photo of Lu Xun and Fujino

The "remoteness", "poverty", and "ignorance of literature" in his mouth are all manifestations of the inferiority in his heart, and it is this inferiority that makes them miss the only and last chance to meet in this life!

It is a pity that Mr. Fujino's "refusal to see Lu Xun" in his later years is exactly the same as the reason why Lu Xun "refused to contact Mr. Fujino" when he first graduated, all because of his inferiority to his situation at that time.

It is a pity that this deep friendship that spans countries and time has also left eternal regrets because of the world. Fate, what a fool!
