"On the Cliff" was released in China on April 30 this year, with a cumulative box office of 1.19 billion yuan, becoming the highest-grossing film in Zhang Yimou's works. Zhang Yimou's last work representing Chinese mainland to impact the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film was "Jinling Thirteen Chao", which failed to be shortlisted for the 2012 Academy Awards. Prior to that, Zhang Yimou also competed for the Oscars on behalf of Chinese mainland and was nominated for the Oscars, namely "Ju Dou" (the first Chinese film to be nominated for an Oscar) in 1991, "The Big Red Lantern Hangs High" in 1992 and "Hero" in 2003.

The 94th Academy Awards will take place on March 27, 2022 at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, and the preliminary list of the 15 Best International Film Awards will be announced on December 21 this year, and the official nominations will be announced on February 8 next year. Wu Junru's "Turbid Water Rafting" and Jia Jingwen's "Waterfall" represented Hong Kong and Taiwan respectively, and competed for the Best International Film Award together with "On the Cliff", which represented Chinese mainland.
