Recently, the staff of the Management and Conservation Bureau of Weishan Qinghua Green Peacock Provincial Nature Reserve in Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province, newly discovered the brown-winged crow, a national level II key protected wild animal, which was included in the 2012 Red List of Endangered Species of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), which is a new record for Weishan birds.
The brown-winged crow (scientific name: Centropus sinensis) is a bird of the family Rhododendron in the order Cuckoo, with a body length of about 52 cm, its body feathers are all black, only the upper back, wings and wing cover feathers are pure chestnut red, the mouth is thick and black, and the tail is long and wide.
The brown-winged crow prefers to move individually or in pairs, rarely in flocks. Usually, he is active on the ground, but also perchs on small branches when resting, especially after the rain, he likes to bask in the sun on the top of the reeds. It is good at concealment, when it encounters interference or danger, it quickly hides in the grass or bushes on the ground, and is also good at walking on the ground, jumping for food, moving very quickly, and often spreading its tail and wings into a fan shape, twisting up and down sharply. When flying, the wings flutter sharply, the tail feathers are open, swinging up and down, the speed is not fast, usually flying not far and landing on the low tree. Its song is continuous, from monotonous low to loud, and its sound is like a "hum-hum", like the barking of a dog in the distance, which can be heard for miles away, especially in the morning and evening.
Weishan Qinghua Green Peacock Provincial Nature Reserve Management and Protection Bureau since August 2016 to carry out scientific research and monitoring work, has laid out 50 infrared cameras, comprehensively strengthen the monitoring and protection of wild animals, rare animals in the reserve increased year by year, as of now, monitored 158 species of birds, 18 species of mammals, 2 species of national level I key protected wild animals, 21 species of national level II key protected wild animals, with the "Love Bird Week", wild birds and other series of publicity activities, the public's awareness of protecting wild animals has been effectively enhanced, New achievements have been made in wildlife conservation.
