Xiao Tian, former deputy director of the State General Administration of Sport, was tried and charged with accepting bribes of 7.96 million yuan

The official microblog of the Intermediate People's Court of Nanyang City, Henan Province, confirmed on September 1 that the court held a public trial this morning to hear the bribery case of Xiao Tian, former deputy director of the State General Administration of Sports, who was accused of accepting bribes of 7.96 million yuan. After the trial, Xiao Tian pleaded guilty and repented in court.

The Nanyang Municipal People's Procuratorate alleged that from 1997 to 2014, defendant Xiao Tian took advantage of his position as director of the Winter Sports Management Center, director of the Department of Athletics and Sports, assistant director of the bureau, deputy director, etc. of the State General Administration of Sports, or took advantage of the convenience of his authority and status to provide assistance to relevant units and individuals in matters such as project contracting, event hosting, work arrangements, and job promotion, and accepted property from relevant personnel totaling more than 7.96 million yuan. Xiao Tian should be held criminally responsible for accepting bribes.

During the trial, the procuratorial organs presented relevant evidence, Xiao Tian and his defender conducted cross-examination, the prosecution and defense fully expressed their opinions, and Xiao Tian admitted guilt and repented in court when he made the final statement. More than 50 people, including people's congress deputies, members of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, journalists, and people from all walks of life, observed the trial. At the end of the trial, the court adjourned the trial and the verdict was pronounced at a later date.

Xiao Tian, a fencer by birth, has served as the director of the Fencing Division of the State Sports Commission, the director of the Cycling Fencing Management Center, the director of the Winter Sports Management Center, the director of the Department of Competitive Sports of the State General Administration of Sports, the assistant director and deputy director of the State General Administration of Sports.

On June 25, 2015, according to the website of the Supervision Department of the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, Xiao Tian, deputy director of the State General Administration of Sports, was suspected of serious violations of discipline and law and was under investigation by the organization. In July of the same year, the State Council removed Xiao Tian from his post as deputy director of the State General Administration of Sports.

In June 2016, after the investigation of the Henan Provincial Procuratorate designated by the Supreme People's Procuratorate was concluded, it was transferred to the Procuratorate of Nanyang City, Henan Province, for review and prosecution. Later, the Nanyang Municipal Procuratorate filed a public prosecution with the Nanyang Intermediate People's Court.
