A Hard Day's Night (1964)

"Sexy, glamorous, avant-garde, radical, psychedelic" – nine of the most rocky movie recommendations

In the fall of 1963, in order to make a fortune from the Beetles in the red half of the sky, United Artists and the Beetles in the United States signed a contract to make a film, with the aim of launching the film's soundtrack in the United States. They approached Walter Shenson as producer, directed by Richard Lester, and made the film A Hard Day's Night in 1964.

Shenson approached the Beatles before they left for the United States in the fall of 1963 and asked them to compose six songs for the film—the subject matter was not limited, but there were two lyrical songs, two fast-paced dance songs, and so on. During their Caribbean vacation, they wrote eight or nine songs, from which Dick Lester selected six to use in the film: You Can't Do That, And I Love Her, I Should Have Known Better, Tell Me Why, If I Fell, I'm Happy Just to Dance with You. Before filming began on March 2, the Beatles recorded the songs at EMI Studios in London. The part playing You Can't Do That was cut out when the film was released, but the previous B-side release as Can't Buy Me Love's single still appears on the American version of the soundtrack.

Filming began on March 2 and ended on April 24. The film uses exaggerated depictions of the Beatles' day of life, and its theme comes from a sentence that John Lennon said. When Lester asked John how their trip to Sweden was, John replied, "It was a room and a car and a car and a room and a room and a car." This sentence was slightly changed and used in the movie, becoming the line "Paul's grandfather".

Shenson had thought he could just find the title of a new song as the title of the movie, but none of the six new songs were appropriate. During filming, everyone racked their brains to find a suitable name for the film. Finally, one day, John talked to him about Ringo's interesting language and cited "A hard day's night" as an example. John himself used the phrase in his just-published In His Own Write. It was agreed that it could be used as a film title. So John wrote the theme song of the film at Shenson's behest and recorded it during the filming on April 16.

The original soundtrack albums published in the United States included only these seven new songs, but for Parlophone's British records, they returned to the studio in June and recorded five more new songs: I'll Cry Instead, I'll be Back, Any Time At all, Things We Said Today, and When I Get Home. Coupled with their previously released single Can't Buy Me Love used in the film, there are a total of 13 songs on the British album, all of which are original songs by the Beatles. It was the first time they had been able to release an entirely original album.

This achievement is largely due to John Lennon's exuberant creativity at the time. Of these 13 songs, 9 capitals were written by him. Paul wrote 3 songs and collaborated with John on I'm Happy Just to Dance With You for George. Of course, according to the principle of the lead singer, John's lead singer on this album is far more than the other three, and does not even give Ringo a chance to perform.

A Hard Day's Night's film became a classic in rock movies, teaching an entire generation of young people the principle of rebellion, and this album marked a new phase in the creation of the Beatles, which we can call "the middle of the early stage", right?
