Interesting fish – the common but playful soda puffer fish "submarine"

author:CEDBITE1945

Today, I write about the zebra head and the Harley dog head that I wrote about before, and it is also the most common and easy to buy one of the puffer fish viewing - "submarine".

Submarines, also known as golden dolls, green pufferfish, scientific name tetraodon nigroviridis , belongs to the chordate phylum ray-finned order Quadrangle family, mainly distributed in Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia, Myanmar and China part of the coastal or brackish water junction area, juveniles mainly inhabit brackish waters, adult fish due to increased demand for salt and into the seawater. The submarine has an oblong oval shape, a yellowish-green back with a large number of round black markings, and a white belly, which is dull and black in poor condition. The fish is mainly used as an ornamental fish and also plays an important role in genomics research.

When the author first met the submarine as a high school, a school passed by the fish market, when there were only a few common fish in the fish shop, I saw this strange shape of the fish and couldn't help but light up, so I spent 5 yuan "high price" to buy it. After being brought to school, the students in the class were amazed, but because they did not know how to raise fish at that time, and had never been exposed to carnivorous fish, after several days of breeding, they found that they did not eat at all, and the color was dull, so they gave it to their classmates and eventually died in the family of their classmates. After graduating from college, he returned to his old profession and began to play with fish, and he could not resist his love for the strange appearance of this fish, but he still failed repeatedly, and after being clicked by an aquarist, he suddenly became cheerful.

How big is the aquarium needed for a submarine? How high is the temperature?

Although the adult fish of submarines can reach a maximum of 15-20 cm, they generally do not exceed 10 cm in the fish tank, so the 30 cm long and 20 cm wide fish tank can be raised for a long time.

The submarine is a tropical fish, and after personal testing by the author, the fish can safely survive the winter at 22 degrees and is very active.

What kind of breeding environment do submarines need?

When I first played fish, I bought submarines several times, but all of them failed, and the fish was dull and had a very low appetite shortly after being raised. After talking about this matter with a very good aquarist at dinner (this aquarist is also a legendary player, the aquarists who played multi-fin fish in the early years probably knew or heard of him, and was one of the earliest aquarists in China to buy the Nile Dinosaur King), the aquarists had a face of "mountain people have their own magic" expression, told the author: Submarine This fish has a trick, as long as you master this trick, you will not die. Then said 5 words:

Salt in the dead.

The author then asked: How much salt is laid? How is the specific gravity calculated?

Aquarists replied: Don't count the proportions, just put as much salt as possible in the fish tank, taste the water as salty as brine, and then grab a large amount of salt and throw it in when changing the water.

The author held the idea of trying it out and bought 2 3-4 cm submarines, in accordance with the way of "salt in the dead" to try it, the effect was extraordinary, the body color of the fish was no longer dull, the belly was always white, and the appetite increased greatly, after familiarizing with the environment, it was very close, its interaction was far more than the timid Harley dog head, no less than the zebra dog head, and after 2 years of breeding, an aquarist opened a fish shop and gave this 2 fish.

After meeting the demand for salt, the submarine has very low requirements for the feeding environment, no special requirements for oxygen, the filter can operate normally, no need for oxygen, the water quality can use unaired tap water, because the fish can eat and pull, so it is best not to lay bottom sand, you can use sunken wood, stones and other embellishments.

What do submarines eat?

Submarines are carnivorous fish, with the same sharp teeth as other pufferfish, and generally feed on shellfish in their native areas, but also catch other small fish and sea earthworms. According to the author's personal tests, submarine shrimp (including frozen shrimp and live shrimp) and bread worms have an extraordinary hobby, but they do not like to catch small fish as the zebra dog head of the same door (it may also be because the author feeds fish cold food or insects all year round, resulting in fish being too lazy to hunt small fish). Dried shrimp can also be used as a staple food after a short period of training, and has a wonderful use for grinding teeth.

Although puffer fish also love to eat snails, because wild snails mostly grow in dirty, bacteria-filled, parasitic sludge, it is not recommended to use snails to feed, if you have a large number of multiplyed apple snails, you can use as a snack.

Tank-cleaning tool fish can use abalone snails of the puffer fish type, and since the abalone snails themselves are soda snails, they will be very suitable for polyculture with submarines. (The author speculates that perhaps abalone snails can be bred in this environment, and next year may be a try)

Can submarines be polycultured?

According to some aquarists, the submarine can be polycultured with fish with a small difference in size, and the author did not test it because he liked to bite the tail fin of his fish, but according to the temper of his zebra head and The Harley dog head, it is best not to polyculture with other fish. At the same time, this fish should not be polycultured with large fish, otherwise once eaten by large fish, the big fish will be poisoned.

Submarines can be polycultured with each other, but are prone to fighting with each other and biting their fins when there is less food. The author once raised 2 submarines in a 30 cm tank for about 2 years, as long as the food is plentiful, there will generally be no fights.

Common diseases and prevention of submarines

Submarines are more susceptible to white spot disease, which can be prevented by slow water change (the same is true for any fish, as long as the speed of entering new water is slow enough when changing water, there will be no outbreak of white spot disease, which has nothing to do with temperature, water quality, etc.). If the fish has suffered from white spot disease, it can be treated with "mercury nitrate" in the fish tank, and the drug can be precipitated by changing the water quickly after the effect.

Because fish shops mostly manage cheap fish poorly, the fins of the submarines purchased are often in tatters, but as long as the fish body itself is not hindered and willing to eat normally, it can generally recover quickly.
