A famous painter of the Qing Dynasty, one of the "Eight Monsters of Yangzhou". Li Eel has loved painting since childhood, and by the age of sixteen he was already quite famous. In the fifty years of the Kangxi Dynasty, Kangxi was summoned to the inner court for worship in the fifty-third year, and was summoned as a court painter, whose court craftsmanship was very accomplished, and he was forbidden to leave his post because he did not want to be bound by the "orthodox" painting style. Qianlong served as the governor of Teng County, Shandong Province, for three years, and won the hearts of the people, and he was deposed because he offended his superiors.

Later, he lived in Yangzhou and sold paintings for a living. He is most closely related to his fellow villager Zheng Xie (Zheng Banqiao), who has the saying that "selling paintings in Yangzhou and is the same as Li Tonglao", and said that Li Eel was "quite jealous of talent, although his mouth was admired".

Li Eel gong poetry calligraphy and painting. He studied painting with Jiang Tingxi and Gao Qipei. Later, under the influence of Shi Tao, he was good at flowers, bamboo stones, and pine cypresses, and in his early years, his painting style was meticulous and rigorous, and he was quite legal. The middle-aged painting style began to change, turning into a thick brush stroke, swinging and spicy, full of momentum, and had a great influence on the late Qing Dynasty flower and bird paintings.

In his early years, he learned to paint landscapes from his fellow villager Wei Lingcang, inherited Huang Gongwang's way, and learned to paint with Jiang Tingxi when he was enshrined in the inner court. Later patriarchal finger painting master Gao Qipei advocated freehand. He also studied Shi Tao's brushwork, painted with broken brush and splashed ink, and the painting style changed greatly, forming a unique style of "ink melting into curiosity". He likes to make long inscriptions on the paintings, with jagged handwriting and novel layouts. His works had a great influence on the painting of flowers and birds in the late Qing Dynasty.

Li Eel expanded the expressive field of freehand flower and bird paintings, flowers and trees, daily utensils, silkworms and the like, one by one into the paintings, the wide range of materials, more than the predecessors. There are also new breakthroughs in the expression of freehand flower and bird paintings, breaking the pen and splashing ink, full of vitality, pen and ink unrestrained, full of dynamics. At the same time, it absorbs the expression method of boneless flowers, the work is meticulous and rigorous, the color ink is light and elegant, the changes are rich, the three-dimensional sense is rich, and it has a strong artistic expression.

Later generations have commented on Li Eel's pen and ink, saying that he has a "domineering spirit" and "lost in the wilderness".
