Through the millennia, Zhao Bandi's painting recreates Han Xizai's night feast

The sound of pipa and wind music, the waving of Zhao Bandi's brush, and the dialogue between sound and color through thousands of years are thus established.

Zhao Bandi, who put down pandas and returned to the field of oil painting, recently moved his cultural party to Beijing. A few days ago, the He Art Center and artist Zhao Bandi reproduced the ancient painting "Han Xizai's Night Feast" with music and painting in the form of an art banquet in the Su-style garden located at the foot of the Forbidden City.

Yesterday, Zhao Bandi, who was busy with a series of activities, said in an interview with the Beijing News that he regained his brush because "now everyone likes to take selfies and slide mobile phones, I want to paint and paint with dignity." But now art is no longer a tool for copying artistic conception, and Zhao Bandi is no longer an oil painter, he said, "Painting is the part of memory, and party is my inspiration." ”

At the foot of the Forbidden City, pay tribute to the night feast of the ancients

"Han Xizai's Night Feast" is a painting by the Southern Tang painter Gu Hongzhong during the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period, which depicts the scene of Han Xizai, a waiter of the Southern Tang Dynasty, at home in a series of long scrolls. The whole volume is divided into five sections, namely the pipa solo, the six solo dances, the feast break, the wind music ensemble, and the guests' rewards, which depict the whole process of a Hanfu night feast.

The "Party Through the Millennium" initiated by Zhao Bandi was also the opening ceremony of the He Art Center, an art space with a Su-style garden landscape located in a courtyard in the west lane of Pudu Temple, quieting in the old Beijing Hutong area full of life. A thousand years later, in such a quiet courtyard, Zhao Bandi's easel had already been set up in the clear water, and the picturesque young girl sitting in the water opened the dinner with a pipa solo, and another girl danced with the pipa. After the dance, five young girls who play wind music sat on a round bench and reproduced the classic wind ensemble passage in "Han Xizai's Night Feast". While the party guests were immersed in the music, Zhao Bandi began his sketching. In just a few strokes, the outline of the performer's demeanor is outlined.

People who are familiar with "Han Xizai's Night Feast" will correspond to the scene of the five sections of the scroll, pipa solo, six solo dance, wind music ensemble, and two more? It turned out that all the guests present were brought into the "Han Xizai Night Feast" by Zhao Bandi, who was both a viewer of this art dinner and a performer of the famous night banquet a thousand years ago.

He made it

"Art Party"

In 2016, Zhao Bandi planned the "Chinese Party – Chopin" cultural party on the outskirts of Chengdu, immersed in a gorgeous grand piano in a turquoise pool. The female player in black sat down in the water and began to play a Chopin piano piece. The Chinese and foreign guests on the shore drank and rejoiced, and everything that happened here was collected on the canvas by Zhao Bandi, who was standing in the water, with a paintbrush. All these scenes are part of the "Chinese Party" in Zhao Bandi's heart, and together with the oil painting "Chinese Party - Chopin" that was born from this, zhao Bandi's artistic method is formed. Since then, Zhao Bandi has become enthusiastic about parties and includes the party itself as part of his work. From "China Party" outside Chengdu, two picnics at the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art and the Guggenheim Museum in New York, to "The Ballet of the Donkey" at Uri Hick's private banquet, Zhao Bandi's identity is more like the maker of an "art party", and painting is more like a way to entertain in a party.

Zhao Bandi, who is closely linked to Chinese contemporary art, grew up with the panda symbol in the late 1990s, from his public service advertisements that seriously engaged in dialogue with a panda doll in various scenes, to the fashion show and movie of the panda symbol, after his behavior triggered widespread discussion in society, Zhao Bandi experienced confusion and thinking, and now he has put down the panda and begun to be enthusiastic about "partying".
