Chen Chao was born in 1972 in Heze, Shandong.

Heze ancient called Caozhou, historically an important town in the Central Plains, its martial arts have a long history, Heze has a wide range of martial arts, there are 39 traditional boxing techniques. Ancient famous generals such as Sun Bin, Peng Yue, Li Dian, and Shan Xiongxin were all born here. In the Qing Dynasty, in the selection of martial arts, Heze gave birth to 2 Wu Zhuangyuan, and there were as many as 30 Wujinshi. Chen Chao was the first Wu Zhuangyuan of Heze in New China.

Chen Chao studied under a folk martial artist at an early age and practiced Plum Blossom Boxing. Later, Chen Chao was admitted to the Heze District Sports School in Shandong Province, where he mainly threw and practiced sprinting. Athletic exercises have given Chen Chao a good strength foundation, reaction ability and super explosive power. At the age of 15, Chen Chao began to formally practice sanda.

In 1990, at the age of 18, Chen Chao was admitted to the martial arts department of Beijing Sport University, where he studied under Guan Jianmin, a famous coach in Sanda, and represented the University in some competitions.

At the 1991 National Wushu Sanda Championships, Chen Chao shot his opponent out of the ring in 13 seconds in each of his first three games, instantly becoming a hot dark horse in the Sanda world. Chen Chao's back hand was heavy, and the "Chen's kicking leg" was fierce and domineering, just like a heavy bomber, and was named "bomber". Chen Chao likes to laugh, and often shows his face with a smile in the ring, which is a bit like the later Sanda King "Dinghai Needle" Yang Xiaojing. Chen Chao's calmness and self-confidence have also earned himself the nickname of "Smiley Face Killer".

In 1994, in the indiscriminate competition of the Chinese Wushu Loose Hand Ring Championship held in Cangzhou City, Hebei Province, Chen Chao defeated the crowd and won the title of "the first Wu Zhuangyuan in New China", when Chen Chao was just 22 years old. A year later, at the Wushu Sanda Century Challenge held in Changsha, Hunan Province, Chen Chao once again successfully defended the ring and was crowned the title of "Chinese Century Wu Zhuangyuan". In 1996, he successfully defended his title again, achieved the "triple crown", and obtained the qualification to permanently preserve the golden helmet of Wu Zhuangyuan. In addition, from 1992 to 1997, Chen Chao won the heavyweight championship of the National Wushu Sanda Ring Competition for 6 consecutive years.

Chen Chao also has equal opponents, and has also encountered his own "hurdle". In the 1996 Wuzhuangyuan final, Chen Chao met his most difficult opponent: Inner Mongolia's Batel.

Battle is 2.05 meters tall, weighs more than 130 kilograms, is 23 centimeters taller than Chen Chao, and weighs 90 pounds more than Chen Chao. In the ring, Chen Chao needs to look up to look at Battle. As soon as the prairie hero Battle came on the field, he used his weight and strength to win quickly. From 2005 to 2013, Chen Chao served as the head coach of the sanda team of Beijing Sport University, and trained a large number of outstanding sanda athletes such as Huang Lei, Zhang Kaiyin, Chen Yanzhao, Fu Jiachun, Wang Guixian, etc. The team won more than 30 national championships and 12 world champions, and personally won the "People's Republic of China Sports Medal" twice, visited or coached in the United States, Italy, Spain, Peru, Indonesia, Senigal, Madagascar, South Korea, Vietnam, Russia, etc. He has made outstanding contributions to the promotion of Chinese martial arts.
