Take stock of 8 Bundesliga stars who have lost in the Premier League

author:T9 from Anfield

On the football pitch, there are many stars who have impressed in European competitions. However, be aware that the transition from one league to another is not an easy task and needs to adapt to the rhythm of the game and the changing situation. Sometimes for some stars who have performed well in one league but can't adapt to another, performance is relatively struggling.

This summer, Jayden Sancho moved from Bundesliga to Borussia Dortmund to the Premier League's most high-profile star. But when he moved to the long-awaited Manchester United, the status and performance given proved to be extremely unsuccessful.

Of course, there have been some success stories in history, with Roberto Firmino and Kevin de Bruyne shining in the Premier League after completing their transfer from Germany. However, this is not always the case, as many players have encountered more or less difficulties in their transfer from the Bundesliga to the Premier League.

Here, we take a look at eight Bundesliga stars who have lost in England's top flight

Timo Werner

Werner

Timo Werner joined the Blues from Leipzig in 2020, and Liverpool are even interested in signing the German before Chelsea launch his £47.5m severance clause. Werner came here with full expectations, but ultimately failed to achieve his ambitions, as the state of his goalscorer instincts that he once had in front of goal seemed to have remained in Germany.

Instead, the Germans are used more as an attacking organiser at Chelsea, as a player who creates goals for the organisation rather than as the kind of player who ends the outcome of the game.

Werner scored six Premier League goals last season, and so far this season he has scored just one goal in the league, far from the 28 Bundesliga goals he has amassed this season before joining Chelsea.

Jayden Sancho

Sancho

Sancho finally returned to England this summer and joined Manchester United for £73m after previously linking up with Old Trafford through multiple windows.

The England international has made incredible numbers at Borussia Dortmund, scoring 50 goals and having 64 assists in four seasons since joining the Bundesliga side at the age of 17.

United believe they are signing a superstar and his record of assists will only make Cristiano Ronaldo more excited when he re-signs with the club after 12 years away from the club, but Sancho has failed to contribute a goal or even an assist since arriving this summer.

Although Sancho is only 21 years old and is likely to achieve better results in the future, the first season of his Career at Manchester United began like a backwater, and it is difficult not to let fans who have high hopes for him worry.

Shinji Kagawa

Sancho is not the first star to move from Borussia Dortmund to Manchester United, with Shinji Kagawa having been signed by Sir Alex Ferguson as early as 2012.

Kagawa moved to the Bundesliga in July 2010 after being signed by Japanese side Sakura Osaka to become Dortmund's main force, and two years later United paid him £12 million to take him to Old Trafford.

The Japanese midfielder struggled to adapt to the rhythm and physical confrontation of the Premier League after coming to Manchester United, but was never able to find his own rhythmic form, and finally scored only six league goals in the Premier League before returning to Borussia Dortmund in 2014.

While his efforts didn't help him adapt to the Premier League environment, Kagawa did become the first Asian player to score a hat-trick in the Premier League in his 4-0 win over Norwich, and he also became the first Japanese player to win the Premier League title.

Sebastian Haller

Haller

West Ham signed Sebastian Haller for £45m in 2019 after the Ivorian striker played for Eintracht Frankfurt in the 2018/19 Bundesliga season.

In the Bundesliga, Haller scored 15 league goals in 29 games, helping his side Eintracht Frankfurt to seventh place and also contributing nine assists for a total of 24 goals, second only to Robert Lewandowski, who scored 29 goals that year.

Coming to the Premier League, however, Haller scored just 10 league goals in two seasons at West Ham and was sold to Ajax in January, where he appeared to have regained his footing and rediscovered his shooting boots.

The Ajax striker has scored seven goals in the Eredivisie this season and seven in just four games in the Champions League. The efficiency is really good.

Jolington

Joe Linton's transfer looks incredible. Because he never really came up in the Bundesliga, it was enough for Newcastle to pay him a transfer fee of £40 million in 2019.

The striker spent four years at Hoffenheim but didn't really make it into the squad until the 2018/19 season, scoring seven Bundesliga goals in 28 games. Perhaps led by the success of Brazilian compatriot Firmino, also from Hoffenheim, Newcastle paid a lot for Jorrington, who scored just six Premier League goals in 79 games for the Magpies.

Jolington has yet to perform satisfactorily this season and the prospects for renewing his contract are slim in the light of Newcastle's current prospects.

André Schüller

Schüller

André Schüller appeared in the Bundesliga with Bayer Leverkusen at the age of 21 and caught the eye before being signed by Chelsea for £18m in 2013.

Schurrler scored 14 goals in bayer Leverkusen's final season and started well at Chelsea, scoring his first goal in the 2-1 win over Manchester City and scoring his first hat-trick later that season.

Suddenly, however, the German's performance dropped, and so did his playing time, and in February 2015, Schüller returned to the Bundesliga with Wolfsburg.

Chelsea won the Premier League title that season, and Schuller's transfer, having played 14 games in the league season, did not prevent him from receiving a Premier League medal, but he comically revealed that when he won a Premier League title, he didn't know if he had played enough games that year...

Nabi Keita

Nabi Keita

Liverpool triggered Nabi Keita's £48m termination clause in August 2017, and although the player didn't join a new team until next season, guineans have found life tough since arriving in England.

The former team-mate, who shared Werner's illness, failed to play a consistent starting role at Liverpool. Since arriving at Anfield, the star's career has also been hampered by injuries.

Keita has made just 60 league appearances in three years since joining Liverpool, although the midfielder has improved his game this season and looks increasingly like the player he signed in 2018.

However, despite starting to excel, an unexpected injury once again led to his career continuing to stagnate in the Premier League.

Gnabry

Serge Gnabry is slightly different from the others in this list because the German did not make a high-profile move to the Premier League, but after he left the Premier League, his career did take off again, which made Arsenal think about what really happened...
