Mr. Verdoux

Monsieur Verdoux is a black-and-white humorous drama comedy released in the United States on April 11, 1947, directed and starring Charlie Chaplin. A film that combines comedy and philosophical reason.

The main plot is: In 1930, Henry Verdou, a bank clerk before the world economic crisis, in order to get out of the predicament, used many false names to marry some rich and single middle-aged women, and then killed them one by one, fourteen women became his victims in turn, and after the conspiracy was revealed, he was arrested and finally sentenced to death.

The film was ranked 49th out of 100 best films of all time in the world in 1978 by The Title magazine in Brazil.

In fact, I watch movies to see the leaderboard, what movies are in the front, praise, thought-provoking, etc. I will take time to watch by a person, I think an excellent movie, often when a person watches alone, can better understand the content to be transmitted in the movie. Watching quietly without distraction is a time to enjoy the charm of life for free.

At the beginning of the film, it is lightly taken by Mr. Verdou to murder his newlywed wife who has just married and is in the honeymoon period, and there are no bloody murder clips throughout the film, all of which are descriptions of daily life, so it is not difficult for us to see that the director's carefully arranged "moment of death" is actually a realistic portrayal of some ordinary life, a scene of carefully planned "accidents".

In the film, you can almost see that anyone except his wife and children will be his target, he is not killing for the sake of killing, he will express his love and ardent pursuit of some single rich women in different cities, and fictionalize his profession, relying on sweet words to wander among these rich people. When he needs money, he chooses who to start, and in less than a day he can create an "accident" and take the money.

Because the film itself doesn't have any intense shots, it's like a stage play, so when you watch it, it will feel too smooth and undulating, but then you will find that compared to the plot, what attracts you to continue to watch is probably humorous and philosophical lines.

At the end of the film, the trial in the courtroom and the two dialogues in prison can be said to be the finishing touch of the whole play. Dialogue in prison can be seen as a relief from life and death, and dying is not necessarily more tragic than being alive.

It can be said that the plot of the first hour of the film is to pave the way for the three conversations in the second half of the hour. The first paragraph is a trial in court: in the film, a lawyer accuses Mr. Verdou of a crime committed and states that "this man, he has a normal brain, if he is upright, he can live a real life, yet he chose to rob and kill innocent women and use it as a profession." This is the lawyer's original words, I do not know what he called "a real life", because they came out of the era, the great depression of the global economy, in the previous film we can see countless people have legendary military uniforms and guns to follow the national leaders to the battlefield, is it true that the aggression against other countries "robbing and killing innocent women" is "a real life?" At the end of the film, when Mr. Verdou talks to a reporter in prison, the reporter says, "You are a tragic example of a sinful life." "But in Mr. Verdou's view, in a time of sin, no one can be exemplary (implication already shows that the aggressor of the state and the violence against women are in the same place).

"If anything is to be successful, it must be well organized." Due to the orderly army of fascists.

When the reporter was surprised to question Mr. Verdou's good and evil remarks, Mr. Verdou said that "random forces, the imbalance of power on either side will destroy us all." "It's sobering, and it's terrifying to think about it."

In fact, when I saw the reporter draw such a conclusion, I don't know if the reporter himself has thought about the invasion of the army, and is the burning and looting in a foreign territory not a large crime scene, an organized and legal "criminal group"?

"Wars and conflicts are business." And what Monsieur Verdou did was "the epitome of the history of big business", and it was similar.

"Killing one person will turn you into a criminal, killing a million will turn you into a hero." This is the cult of numbers. ”

In conversations with the priest, when the priest prayed that Monsieur Verdou would live in harmony with God, Mr. Verdou said: "I have always lived in harmony with God, and the object of my conflict with me is man. ”

When a country is about to have the phenomenon of "cannibalism", it will not be the sin of the individual, but the sin of the whole era, the sin of the whole country.

"Who knows what sin is! Born as an angel of God who fell from heaven, who knows what its mission is? ”
