The Texas sheep originated from the old Texaser sheep on the island of Texas on the north coast of the Netherlands, and were cross-bred with Lincoln and Leicester in the mid-19th century. It has the characteristics of good muscle development and lean meat. Now the United States, Australia, New Zealand and other countries have a large number of breeding, is used for fat lamb production.
Physical characteristics
The male and female of the Texass sheep have no horns, short ears, no wool covering of the head and limbs, only white hairs, a wide and short head, and a black nose. The back and waist are straight, and the ribs are well opened.
Variety characteristics
Dexel sheep have the characteristics of high lean meat rate and good carcass quality. Wool 46 to 56 pieces, shearing volume of 3.5 to 4.5 kg, hair length of about 10 cm. Lambs grow and develop rapidly, reaching 40 to 50 kg from 4 to 5 months old. The slaughter rate is 55% to 60%, and the lambing rate is 150 to 160%. The sheep is generally used as a patrilineal breed for fat lamb production and has a tendency to replace Suffolk sheep.
Introduction and breeding
Introduced to Canada in the early 1990s, it contributed significantly to the Canadian lamb trade through crossbred breeding.
