He is Italy's most legendary goalkeeper, holding the astonishing record of 1142 consecutive minutes without conceding a goal, and led Italy to the World Cup as captain at the age of 40. He is Dino Zoff, and today is his 77th birthday.
From an early age, Zoff aspired to become a professional goalkeeper with a proven track recorder, and his idol was the former Soviet door god Lev Yassin. At the age of 14, he applied to join Inter Milan and Juventus, but both were rejected on the grounds that he was "not tall enough" and "too thin".
Zoff, who became a late bloomer, did not enter the national team until the age of 26. He was at his peak around the time of the 1974 World Cup final, when he was 32 years old. In the 1982 World Cup, the 40-year-old Zoff led the team to win the World Cup and was elected the best goalkeeper of the World Cup. Zoff made 112 appearances for Italy, a record that was not broken by Paolo Maldini until more than 30 years later.
In Serie A, Zoff also had an impressive record, winning six Serie A titles, playing for Juventus in 11 seasons, and helping the team win 1 UEFA Cup and 2 Coppa Italia.
In June 1983, Zoff officially announced his retirement. Since then, he has coached Juventus and Lazio in Serie A and has also served as the head coach of the Italian team. In his coaching career, Zoff won a total of 1 Italian Cup, 1 UEFA Cup and 1 European Cup runner-up.
