Jin Yamei is the first female student in China to study abroad, because her parents died prematurely due to illness, hoping to learn advanced medical science knowledge and medical technology to serve the motherland. She subverted the restrictions of conservative ideas on women, crossed the ocean to the United States to study, and graduated from the Women's Medical University affiliated to New York Hospital in May 1885 with the first place in the class, becoming the first female Western doctor in China.

First, encounter three major misfortunes in life, bereavement in early years, divorce in middle age, and loss of children in old age. When Jin Yamei was two years old, her parents died of the plague. After her meticulous treatment, many patients recovered as before, and many patients turned the corner and got rid of the threat of death. In 1907, Jin Yamei was hired by the Tianjin Municipal Government to serve as the president of Beiyang Women's Hospital. Beiyang Women's Hospital was founded in 1902 after Yuan Shikai became the governor of Zhili, and the hospital address was in the Water Pavilion outside the East Gate. She did her best to run the hospital in an orderly manner, was deeply trusted and praised by women patients, and became a well-known person in Tianjin Hospital at that time.

In her work, Jin Yamei experienced the inadequacy of the medical conditions for women and infants in China, and believed that it was urgent to train professional medical personnel. Therefore, in 1908, she wisely met Yuan Shikai, tried her best to persuade him, and the Tianjin Customs took out 20,000 taels of silver and founded the Beiyang Women's Medical Hall, with her as the principal, which was the first nursing school of a public nature in China.

In 1911, together with Sun Gan, a Physician of Tianjin Western Medicine, she initiated the formation of the Tianjin Red Cross Society, becoming the first Red Cross Society founded in China. Moreover, he paid 3,000 silver yuan to fund the construction of the internship base of Peking National Midwifery School.

In 1916, due to the death of Yuan Shikai, Tianjin Customs refused to allocate funds for the women's hospital, so Yan Xiu, a gentry of Jinmen, took over the hospital.
