On August 26, Kang Yan, director of the Department of Critical Care Medicine at West China Hospital of Sichuan University, was evacuated from Yangzhou, and when he left, the severe and critically ill patients in Yangzhou had been cleared, and the remaining treatment work was handed over to the Jiangsu Provincial Expert Group.
Since participating in the fight against the epidemic in Wuhan, like the other seven "eight immortals with severe diseases", Kang Yan has also spent most of his time on the front line of the fight against the epidemic, from Wuhan in Hubei to Suifenhe in Heilongjiang, Kashgar in Xinjiang, Qingdao in Shandong, Shijiazhuang in Hebei, and Yangzhou in Jiangsu, from the initial "encounter" to the later "obstruction war" and "annihilation war". Among them, what moved him the most was the hero behind the silent support of medical workers behind his back.

From the sudden "encounter" to the prepared "annihilation war"
On August 6, after receiving a notice from the National Health Commission, Kang Yan set off, this time to Yangzhou. When he arrived at the Third People's Hospital of Yangzhou City on August 7, Qiu Haibo, vice president of Southeast University and leader of the Department of Critical Care Medical Science of the Zhongda Hospital affiliated to Southeast University, was already in command, and more than 20 severe patients were being treated in the ICU. One of kang yan's main tasks after arriving in Yangzhou is to do a good job of stratification of patients, because the treatment plan for patients with different conditions is not the same. For mild ordinary patients, more is the early attention to prevent the transfer of severe disease; the severe patients will be given closer attention, appropriate supportive treatment, as far as possible to curb the progression of the disease; critically ill patients concentrated in iCU treatment, medical expert team members will go to these patients every day to give these patients a clinical round, the purpose is to let each patient get the most suitable treatment for him, to get the best results.
Less than three weeks after Kang Yan arrived in Yangzhou, the severe patients had cleared to zero. "In Wuhan, it was a sudden 'encounter,' and then a blockade war and a war of annihilation, and we were prepared." Compared with the situation encountered in supporting Wuhan, Kang Yan said that with the step-by-step improvement to the eighth edition, practice has proved that as a guiding document for the treatment of the new crown, the national version of the diagnosis and treatment plan is very effective.
Recalling the scene when he arrived in Wuhan on February 7, 2020, Kang Yan admitted that as the leader of the third batch of medical rescue teams at West China Hospital of Sichuan University, when he led a team of 130 people to fight the new crown pneumonia virus in an "encounter", he actually had no bottom at the beginning. Kang Yan said that the medical team brought a lot of critical care materials, and 40% of the medical staff in the team were critically ill medical personnel, which can be said to be prepared. Before leaving, he promised that "130 people must go out and 130 people come back intact." However, after arriving at the ward, because the ward was rebuilt from the ordinary ward, it did not meet the standards from the technical standards, the oxygen supply pressure was not enough, and the daily protective clothing was not enough, Kang Yan and the team members would also have anxiety and worry in their hearts.
When they first arrived at the hotel, they re-practiced putting on and taking off protective clothing and conducted infection prevention and control training to ensure that everyone clearly understood the norms. A week later, it was quickly on track. Kang Yan said that based on the accumulation and experience of some time, the protection of medical staff has become more and more scientific, and since then, he has traveled to so many places to participate in the fight against the epidemic, and he has been a normal mentality for the new crown virus: "In the face of the treatment of seriously ill patients, we must rush to the front, this is an unforgettable trace engraved in the bones and flowing in the blood, the risk is there, but in the depths of the heart will not shrink back." ”
As the head coach of the medical team, Kang Yan was responsible for overall planning at that time, and the temporary team formed the maximum synergy in a very short period of time. But as long as time permits, he will insist on checking patients at the bedside every day to guide the implementation of clinical treatment. In Wuhan, Kang Yan participated in the first bedside tracheal intubation, the first case of deep vein catheterization, the first case of extubation, the first case of prone ventilation, and the first case of invasive mechanical ventilation patient out of the ct examination.
Since then, Kang Yan has also been involved in the treatment of severe patients with new crown pneumonia in various places. When asked about his family's feelings, Kang Yan said that his wife is an anesthesiologist and understands his work. When the SARS epidemic occurred in 2003, although the hospital did not receive patients, they were also organizing medical teams, and he and his wife had signed up separately, and when they learned that each other had signed up, the two just looked at each other and smiled. "Compared with Dean Qiu, my time is relatively short, and my family understands it very well, and does not let me worry about family affairs." In fact, I just changed places to continue working. Kang Yan said with a smile.
Touched by the efforts of the heroes behind them
After returning from Wuhan, after a period of precipitation, recalling the original anti-epidemic situation again, Kang Yan was even more touched by those who silently supported medical workers behind their backs, including volunteers and media reporters.
What particularly impressed Kang Yan was a driver of a small car who volunteered to drive for him. At that time, the medical team members were basically from the hotel to the hospital, two points and one line, the local government equipped each team with public transportation cars to meet the travel needs of the medical team, all drivers are volunteers, they take turns on duty day and night, can not go home, basically two or three hours later there will be pick-up needs, often at night two or three o'clock, three or four o'clock, the car will carry the medical team members who change shifts back and forth, "the driver said it doesn't matter, as long as the phone will come to pick up, more than 10 times a day are arranged." "Their hard work, Kang Yan and the medical team members are all in the eyes.
What impressed Kang Yan the most was a car driver. At that time, he had to go to the Wuhan Convention Center every day at five o'clock in the afternoon to participate in the discussion of the death cases of the national expert group, and in this discussion, which the medical staff jokingly called "over the hall", he would summarize the experience and lessons learned from each death case, so that the subsequent treatment would be more effective. From the hospital to the Wuhan Convention Center, a one-way drive takes about 40 minutes. To this end, the local government has equipped Kangyan with a car to meet its temporary travel needs. In fact, Kang Yan can drive himself, he also said this to the driver, but the driver insisted on sending. "He noticed that I would take a nap in the back seat every time and insist on driving, hoping I could take a break on the road. And every time he brings me a small cup of coffee, they are grateful to those of us who have supported the fight against the epidemic. Looking back in hindsight, Kang Yan was still overflowing with emotions.
Kang Yan also pays attention to those media workers who are struggling on the front line like medical workers. Kang Yan still remembers the two "little friends" (young reporters) who stayed with them in the ward for a month when they were in Wuhan, and when the medical team was evacuated, they had not left and still insisted on reporting on the front line. "In the past, my attitude toward the media was to avoid as much as possible, but later I found that after the patient's true state was positively transmitted to the society through the media, it would get the attention of the society and make things develop in a better direction." Kang Yan said that it was precisely because of the reports of media reporters that the real state of Wuhan at that time, the problems it faced, and more positive energy things could be transmitted to the people of the whole country in a timely manner. In the fight against COVID-19, there are too many people and things behind the work of medical staff. "The fight against the new crown pneumonia epidemic is an action with the participation of the whole people, and medical staff have only received more attention because of the treatment of patients, which is a praise from the society for us and a great recognition." Kang Yan said.
At present, the sporadic new crown epidemic will still appear in some places, several people in the "eight immortals of severe illness" will "coincidentally meet" in a certain place from time to time, although 8 people have not gathered after Wuhan, but in the "group of eight immortals of severe disease", in addition to caring for each other, everyone will also pay attention to and communicate the treatment situation in various places. In Kang Yan's view, intensive care medicine has withstood the test of this epidemic, and has also seized the opportunity to develop, be paid attention to and valued by more people, and the value it embodies will attract more young people to participate in it, which is a new beginning for the development of disciplines to enter a virtuous circle.
Beijing News: How do you view the title of "Eight Immortals of Severe Illness"?
Kang Yan: Originally it was Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, but faced with the problem of medical treatment, I thought of "eight immortals crossing the sea to show their magic", we jokingly said, fortunately, Professor Jiang Li is there, otherwise it will become "Eight King Kongs". This title has a certain meaning and value, so that we also have more sense of responsibility and more confidence to fight the epidemic.
