The Pursuit of Happiness is one of my favorite movies and the climax scene always gives me a few catches in the throat.

Chris (Will Smith)has been through very challenging times. His wife left him; he got evicted from his house, rendered homeless; had very little income (a few dollars in his pocket), and a son to look after. All he has is an unpaid internship at a reputed stock brokerage firm and his only hope to get back his life is to beat other interns to a full-time position.

But he cops all of it, runs himself ragged and manages to complete his internship.

The firm executives call him on the last day of his internship to give him the feedback on his performance. Chris gingerly walks in, looking tired and very nervous. After shaking hands, he takes his seat.

Dialogue goes like this.

Chris stops smiling, his face turning pensive. This is big for him. But he doesn't react, yet.

Executive continues- “…If you'd like to work here as a broker. Would you like that，Chris?”

Chris nods- “Yes sir,” fighting his emotions, his mouth contorted, eyes welled up.

Executive- “Good, we couldn't be happier. So welcome.” After a beat, “Was it as easy as it looked?”

Chris still choking with emotions- “No sir. it wasn't”

After a brief informal exchange, as Chris gets up to shake hands a tear rolls down his cheek. But he gracefully acquits himself.

Chris walks out of the cabin and towards his desk. He has a spring in his strides, chest swelled with pride and jaws clenched in determination as executives in the background look on with admiration. He collects his stuff and leaves.

Now he is outside the office building, standing on the sidewalk, amid the swarming mass of people passing by him. A surge of emotions rises through him. He triumphantly raises his arms and congratulates himself, then claps, then lets out a cry of joy, then throws his fists in the air. Crowd obviously doesn't care about his ecstasy but Chris is least bothered. He is enjoying the beginning of “a little part of his life” which he calls happiness.

Now we see him rushing to his kid’s day center to share his happiness. He lifts him and hugs tightly, relieved that he is finally in a position to provide his son a good life.

It's a beautiful scene. It's hard not to feel genuinely happy for Chris and his son after what they have been through.

I strongly believe that the whole four-minute scene is Will Smith’s career best performance. He emotes brilliantly without any artifice. Most of the people in his shoes would react in the same manner.

As for me, I'm yet to outgrow this scene and its emotional appeal.
