Truly honor to join Aramark Collegiate Hospitality team to discuss the student internship at NACAS West CX Annual Conference in Seattle on June 19, 2023.
As a faculty living on-campus and teaching restaurant and event management course at University of Nevada-Las Vegas, I had a first-hand observation to see how students living-learning-working-thriving on campus. I also share an index of 2% threshold for the “integrated” student foodservice workers on campus – 2% student foodservice workers of the entire on the ground enrolled students, say a 30,000 enrolled student campus for a total of 600 student foodservice workers, accompanied by at least 20% student housing beds on campus (6,000 beds). One caveat – it’s very difficult to drive up student foodservice workers without a certain number of on-campus or around campus student housing beds.
Interesting data point shared by Aramark, international student accounts at least 30% of the student foodservice workers on campus. International students can learn & work at on-campus foodservice roles, similar to working at school libraries. On-campus jobs in most American campuses, does not require 1-year residence before applying to Curricular Practice Training (CPT) permit. On-campus jobs can also provide students with live working experience, customer service, personal soft-skill building, English conversation practicing, American work ethics, and leadership training.
As a matter of fact, on-campus foodservice operator actually is one largest restaurant franchisee/licensee for multi-unit restaurants in the U.S. As of December 2021, Aramark is ranked #8 for a total of 637 franchise/license units. The same unit count is led by #1 Flynn Restaurant Group (2,355 stores), #2 Carrols Corporation (1,075 store), #3 Sun Holdings, Inc. (1,045). Aramark operates a total of 122 Chick-fil-a stores, 108 Einstein Brother Bagels, 56 Subway, and 45 Panda Express stores.
