How to use iSCSI Targets on Windows Computers

Overview

This article will guide the administrator into mounting an iSCSI Target from the Synology DiskStation onto a Windows-based computer. Please make sure that an iSCSI Target has been created on the DiskStation and is ready for use.

Note: Modern Windows computers may come with an iSCSI Initiator software already integrated with the operating system, if it is not available, the iSCSI Initiator software from Microsoft is available here.

Step 1: Open the Microsoft iSCSI Initiator Software from Control Panel
Step 2: Click on Discovery
Step 3: Add Portal...
Step 4: Enter the IP Address or the DNS Name of the Synology DiskStation, which is hosting the iSCSI Target Click Ok
Step 5: After the iSCSI Portal is detected, click on Targets
Step 6: Select the Target to be used, and click Log On
Step 7: Advanced if CHAP or any of the Advanced settings are enabled on the iSCSI Target on the Synology DiskStation Enter the CHAP Credentials if needed Close the Advanced Settings Window Suggestion: enable the Automatically restore this connection when the computer starts or equivalent function, so when the computer boots, it will automatically mount the iSCSI Target. Log On to Target when finished.
Step 8: The iSCSI Target is now mounted
Step 9: Proceed with Formatting the iSCSI Target for use on Windows

After a iSCSI Target has been mounted on a Windows computer, it will have to be formatted before it can be used.

Open Administrative Tools
Computer Management
A prompt will be displayed to Initialize the newly added virtual drive. Please select a partition style most appropriate for the disk to be used.
Right click on the new disk (indicated by the black field), and select New Simple Volume
Proceed forward with the Simple Volume Wizard
Select the drive size to use for the new hard drive
Assign a drive letter for the new hard drive
Select a File system Allocation unit size Enter a Volume label to be used on the new hard drive Recommended: Enable Quick Format And press Next
Confirm the settings of the new drive
Step 10: The drive format will proceed and a new window will present itself denoting that the drive is ready for use.

• The iSCSI Target will go off-line to conduct the Target size increase
• Expanding a file system is dependent if the file system has this ability.

Note that the iSCSI Target is nearing maximum capacity... Save and close all applications, open documents, etc, which are associated or have used the iSCSI Target
Proceed to the iSCSI LUN Advanced Options and adjust the LUN size to a larger capacity
Note the additional unallocated space.
Right-click on the existing volume and click on Extend Volume
Follow through the Extend Volume Wizard
Leave the settings for default, which will use the maximum storage available.
The Wizard has finished Extending the existing storage volume.

iSCSI Initiator software from , and proceed to Select the Target which is currently Connected Details
Click on the Check Box by the Session Unique ID Log off The computer has successfully dismounted or ejected the iSCSI Target, and is no longer accessing it
