Title: "Unveiling the Gritty Masterpiece: 'Steadfast' by Zhang Yimou"

Introduction:

Farewell to Zhang Songwen! At 52, Yu Hewei has breathed new life into Chinese crime cinema, establishing himself as a true "bigwig." Zhang Yimou's latest creation, "Steadfast," marks his first foray into the realm of anti-corruption and organized crime genres. Released during the National Day holiday, the film ignited fervent discussions and garnered enthusiastic acclaim, boasting an impressive 8.9 rating on Douban and grossing over a billion RMB at the box office. But is the film truly deserving of such accolades?

Goodbye Zhang Songwen! 52-year-old Yu Hewei has a real "big man" in domestic crime films

How does it differ from other works in the anti-corruption genre? And how does it reflect Zhang Yimou's distinct style and signature characteristics? Let's embark on a journey to explore these questions.

Revisiting the Scale and Character Portrayal:

"Steadfast" can be aptly described as an unflinching depiction of criminal elements, encompassing drug trafficking, smuggling, kidnappings, murders, and even rape, vividly illustrating the audacity and impunity of the criminal underworld. These scenes are not just shocking and terrifying; they also offer a deeper insight into the profound societal menace posed by these criminal forces. The character development is painstakingly detailed and chilling. Take Yu Hewei's portrayal of Li Zhitian, a business magnate and underworld kingpin. He exudes an outward appearance of sophistication and charity, concealing a ruthless, conniving, and sadistic nature. Li Zhitian exploits his commercial and political influence to manipulate and corrode society. He even orchestrates a sinister plot using his own daughter to seduce and entrap Su Jianming, played by Lei Jiayin, ultimately ending her life at his own hands. He embodies an extreme antagonist, a character starkly contrasting with societal norms.

Navigating Production Challenges:

Given the sensitive subject matter, "Steadfast" undoubtedly encountered its share of production and censorship challenges. To gain approval, the film underwent modifications, such as relocating the story from Chongqing to the fictional city of Jinjiang and altering the roles initially involving government officials and law enforcement personnel. These adjustments, while not altering the film's core narrative or theme, did impact certain details and logic. For instance, after Su Jianming falls victim to Li Zhitian's machinations, he opts for a fugitive path rather than seeking help from law enforcement or exposing Li Zhitian's crimes. During his flight, he faces numerous hazards and predicaments. This narrative choice may strike some viewers as somewhat implausible or less realistic. Moreover, Su Jianming's decision to confront Li Zhitian head-on, resulting in their mutual demise in a fiery explosion, might be perceived as an incomplete or unsatisfying resolution by some audiences. These concerns, however, are not insurmountable but might leave critical or discerning viewers with slight reservations.

A Departure and Yet the Essence of Zhang Yimou:

Zhang Yimou is renowned as a visual virtuoso, with his works characterized by aesthetic beauty and visual impact, as seen in "Hero," "House of Flying Daggers," and "Curse of the Golden Flower." However, "Steadfast" diverges from these elements, emphasizing story and character portrayal. This shift may stem from a desire to explore a new style and subject matter or a closer connection to reality and society. Nevertheless, it does not signify an abandonment of Zhang Yimou's signature style. Elements of his visual prowess still shine through. For example, Li Zhitian's opulent mansion and club are rendered in warm hues, showcasing his extravagance and power, while Su Jianming's residence and workplace are bathed in cool tones, accentuating his modesty and isolation. This interplay of colors not only enhances the film's aesthetic appeal but also heightens the contrast and conflict.

Performances that Send Shivers:

In this year's film and television landscape, one character that left a deep impression of a crime boss is none other than Gao Qiqiang. Gao Qiqiang's transformation from a fishmonger to a crime lord is one of the most captivating and controversial roles in "Reckless Acceleration," a TV series. In this series, Zhang Songwen portrayed Gao Qiqiang with remarkable precision, encapsulating the struggles and aspirations of the working class as well as the ambition and cruelty of the criminal world. His nuanced performance flawlessly captured the character's complex emotions, enriching the entire TV series. In "Steadfast," however, Yu Hewei takes on the role of the antagonist, Li Zhitian, an influential and ruthless crime lord. With his resonant voice and sly smile, Yu Hewei crafts Li Zhitian into a truly terrifying and detestable character. He not only exhibits cunning and brutality but also reveals Li Zhitian's ambition and greed. Confronted with justice and the law, his arrogance and disdain are mixed with fear and anger. The unexpected and fitting conclusion Li Zhitian faces at the film's end brings both delight and closure to the audience. In comparison to Zhang Songwen's portrayal, Yu Hewei's antagonist seems to send even more shivers down the viewers' spines.

In conclusion, "Steadfast" stands as a must-watch in the crime genre. It not only showcases Zhang Yimou's innovative style and exploration but also reaches new heights in the anti-corruption theme. The film delivers both visual and emotional impact, inspiring profound contemplation. "Steadfast" represents Zhang Yimou's ceiling-shattering endeavor in the anti-corruption genre and emerges as one of the most dazzling and outstanding films in this year's National Day cinema lineup. Yu Hewei's performance, in particular, leaves the audience awestruck. What are your thoughts on this?
