WIC launches AI for Social Good program

The World Internet Conference (WIC) “AI for Social Good” program was launched in Nishan, Qufu, East China’s Shandong province, on June 26.

Liang Hao, executive deputy secretary-general of the WIC, released the AI for Social Good Action Plan (2023-2025) at the launch ceremony.

He put forward four action plans for AI-backed public welfare activities: establishing a global coordination mechanism; promoting global projects cooperation to share the technological benefits of AI; carrying out training to bridge global digital divide; and enhancing communication and publicity of such activities.

Winnie Yeung, director for Public and Legal Affairs of Microsoft Greater China, shared Microsoft's experience in using speech synthesis technology to assist visually impaired people to “read”.

Liu Zhouhong, deputy secretary-general of the Tencent Foundation, introduced how the foundation uses AI technology to protect snow leopards, and organizes the Tencent Light·Technology Public Welfare Creation Camp to call people’s attention to social issues such as endangered species protection, as well as education and training.

Michael Campbell, ambassador of the Republic of Nicaragua to China, shared practices of international cooperation in AI for social good.

Danilo Casertano, founder of Associazione Manes, shared the practice of AI for social good in education, calling for eliminating poverty and promoting sustainable development with the help of AI.

The “AI for Social Good” program was jointly launched at the ceremony by Ren Xianliang, secretary-general of the WIC, Michael Campbell, ambassador of the Republic of Nicaragua to China, Zhu Ran, vice president of Alibaba Cloud Intelligence, Fan Jianping, vice president of Lenovo Group, Liu Zhaohui, vice president of 360 Group, Zhu Yutao, president of the China Branch of the BRICS Institute of Future Networks, Jiang Tao, vice president of Intel, and Ma Tao, executive vice president of Nokia Shanghai Bell.

Before the event, the WIC initiated a worldwide solicitation of public welfare programs involving the application of AI technology. It has received 33 projects in education, health care, cultural exchanges, and biodiversity protection from 23 enterprises and organizations worldwide, including Google, Microsoft, Intel, Nokia, Tencent and Alibaba.

Looking ahead, the WIC will work with all parties to promote the program as well as its three-year plan, and to guide all parties worldwide to bridge digital divide using AI technology and build an era of inclusiveness, openness and mutual benefit.
