Glad是开心高兴的意思，give the glad hand字面意思也不难理解，表示愉快地握手，或者握手言欢。
但这个俚语在使用的时候，需要拨开它的表面意思，留心它更深层的内涵。剑桥英语词典对glad hand的解释是：to be very friendly to people you have not met before, usually as a way of trying to get an advantage。即：常指出于某种目的热烈欢迎或招呼，接待。
由此可见，give the glad hand是带有一定的负面意义的，是怀有某种动机的虚假的热情握手。就像竞选者跟选民的握手，似乎热情，但显然不是出自真心，只不过是出于笼络民心，多捞几张选票而已。
