（201）The Vain Jackdaw
It is said that God decided to create a ruler over the birds,and he proclaimed that on a certain day they should all present themselves before him, when he would himself choose the most beautiful among them to be their king. The jackdaw knew he was ugly, but he wanted very much to be chosen as the king. Therefore, he searched through the woods and fields,collected the feathers which had fallen from the wings of other birds, and stuck them in all parts of his body. He hoped that he could make himself the most beautiful of all in this way. When the appointed day arrived, all the birds had gathered before God. The jackdaw also made his appearance in his beautiful clothing made of many different feathers.But when God proposed to make him the king because of the beauty of his feathers,other birds angrily protested . They plucked from him their own feathers, leaving the jackdaw nothing but a jackdaw .
虚荣的寒鸦
据说上帝决定为鸟儿们制造一个统治者，他宣布它们必须在某一天在他的面前各自展示，而他将亲自选出其中最美丽的一只作为百鸟之王。寒鸦知道自己很丑，但是他很想成为鸟中之王。因此，他寻遍树林田野，收集从其它鸟的翅膀上掉下来的羽毛，粘在自己的浑身上下。他希望这样可以使他成为鸟儿中最美丽的一只。当规定好的那天到来的时候，所有的鸟儿都聚集到上帝面前，寒鸦也披着他那件由不同羽毛做成的衣裳露面了。上帝看到他那绚丽的羽毛，提议由他来做鸟中之王。但是其他的鸟坚决反对。他们从寒鸦身上拔下属于自己的羽毛，让寒鸦只剩下了光秃秃的自己。
