Marathon originated on September 12, 490 BC. On that day, Persians faught with Athenians in a town called Marathon.In the end, Athenians won the battle. The Athenian general Millerite sent a soldier named Pheidippides back to Athens. Pheidippides ran to Athens. When he reached Athens , he was so excited that he cried out, "We have won the victory!" Then he suddenly fell to the ground and died.
To commemorate this event, the first modern Olympic Games held in 1896 established the marathon race with the full distance of 42.193 kilometers.
