Ankara boasts a new landmark of international influence, the Presidential Symphony Orchestra Concert Hall focuses on culture, aims to consolidate local and global musical values, and at the same time, it is also a platform for interaction and exchange between the public. The Presidential Symphony Orchestra Concert Hall is located in the heart of the city, right in the middle of the axis of the historic Ankara Castle and the mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk (founder of the Republic of Turkey). It blends into a relatively dilapidated urban landscape, the only difference between Anit Kabir and the historic Ankara Castle from the point of view of Ataturk Avenue, which has been the main road since The first urban planning in Ankara. This was done to avoid blocking the view of the castle and mausoleum.
This programme has two outstanding features: one is the subtle symbolism of the historical dialogue about the city's pre-modern and modern republicanism. The design strategy prioritizes two landmark landscapes and establishes communication as a modern and contemporary cultural destination between the two. The second is about the eternal form and spatial quality of the complex. According to the commission's report, the scheme demonstrates a symbolic building that does not wear out over time, avoiding a time-sensitive design language.
The complex has been carefully designed with a triangular foyer establishing a dialogue between Ankara Castle and the Mausoleum of the Sun Yat-sen. Thus, the depiction of "before and after the Republic" is reinforced by this cultural building. The foyer is designed as an "urban space" that is transparent and accessible to the public. The huge egg-shaped dome is designed as a symphony orchestra hall for 2,000 spectators, and the spherical dome is designed as a chamber orchestra hall for 500 spectators, protruding from the vaulted triangular foyer. Following the vineyard concept of the concert hall, the performers were placed in the middle, while the audience arranged in a steep inclined manner around the stage.
The unique and lively Euclid form and its poetic composition depict the symbolic approach. The foyer and concert hall are located on the lowest level of the venue and are surrounded by a reflected pool. The pool reflects the sky, the city and the surrounding halls, reflecting different weather conditions and creating a new atmosphere for each day. On either side of this rectangular pool, two identical buildings are diagonally opposite, as if emerging from the earth and surrounding the concert hall.
The complex creates a heavenly pool-like imprint and otherworldly influences. In these upwardly sloping buildings, there are administrative and educational units as well as professional studios. The visitor's experience deliberately eschews a single roof or façade in order to create a sculptural structure that forms a seemingly independent form and a balanced sense of balance between the curved and sharp edged buildings.
In the 29 years since the competition was held, 5 presidents, 10 prime ministers, and 20 different ministers of culture have been in charge of the project. Due to the different priorities of the country, the history of the project is unprecedented, so the architects have redesigned the project several times according to several changed specifications.
