Nearly 500 species of pests were intercepted at the Nanjing port in the first half of the year

Baldback forest ants, North American tianniu, small spore pseudopolar polyspores... These creatures of all kinds were "uninvited guests" intercepted at the Nanjing port in the first half of 2017. According to the statistics of Jiangsu Nanjing Inspection and Quarantine Bureau, since the beginning of this year, 498 species of such quarantine pests have been intercepted at the Nanjing port alone, and 2308 species have been intercepted. Among them, 47 species of pests were intercepted at postal ports and 162 kinds of pests were intercepted at airport ports, and 75 species of pests were intercepted at airports and ports, and 410 kinds of pests were intercepted. It was the first time in China that 12 species of pests were intercepted, including jasper bugs, red and black bow-backed ants and other highly transmitted and harmful species.

The invasion of alien pests poses a huge threat to biodiversity and the ecological environment of agriculture and forestry around the world, which is a global ecological problem and has always been the focus of port protection in various countries. The carriers and "smuggling" channels that these invaders "ride" are diverse, and there are also many "new varieties". In the first half of this year, the Nanjing Airport Bureau found bald-backed forest ants for the first time in the country on wooden boxes of airborne inbound transit goods from France. The Nanjing Post Office intercepted 24 rhododendron seedlings in Japanese mailings, and detected microspores in rhododendrons, which was the first interception at a national port.

For containers or other items seized that have been seized with epidemic situations, the inspection and quarantine department generally adopts fumigation or destruction to deal with them to ensure the biosecurity of the country. Since the beginning of this year, jiangsu Nanjing Inspection and Quarantine Bureau has continuously strengthened the security of ports, carried out targeted research on the characteristics of plant quarantine business at sea, land and air ports, and vigorously promoted the two-way integration of on-site quarantine inspection and on-site initial screening laboratory identification, effectively improving the effectiveness of checks.
