"100 Years of the Party Seeking Health for the People" 18.Pioneer of Tumor Virology - Zeng Yi

Zeng Yi (1929-2020), a member of the Communist Party of China, a famous virologist in China, a researcher at the Institute of Viral Disease Prevention and Control of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, served as the president of the Chinese Academy of Preventive Medicine, the president of the third council of the Chinese Preventive Medicine Association, and the former dean of the School of Life Science and Biological Engineering of Beijing University of Technology.

Zeng Yi has been engaged in medical virus research for a long time and has made great contributions in the field of disease prevention and control. In the field of scientific research, he began to carry out tumor virus research in China in 1961, and later established a tumor research group in a cancer hospital and established an immunization room. The prevention and treatment of Ebvovirus and nasopharyngeal carcinoma he is engaged in has made great contributions not only to the health cause of China, but also to the health cause of all mankind. In addition to the EBV, Zeng Yi has also carried out many other viral studies, such as elucidating the distribution of HTLV-1 virus in China and its relationship with adult T lymphocytic leukemia and neurological diseases for the first time in China, and studying the relationship between HPV and cervical cancer.

Zeng Yi was one of the earliest scientists engaged in AIDS research in China. As a researcher who has been working on tumor viruses for more than 20 years, since Zeng Yi learned of the U.S. report in 1981, he was acutely aware that the disease could spread to China and cause serious consequences. Therefore, he began to do active knowledge and technical reserve work. In 1984, Zeng Yi took the lead in conducting hiv research in China, and through epidemiological investigations and laboratory studies, he proved that HIV was introduced to China from the United States in 1982 with blood products, and first infected Chinese citizens in 1983. In 1987, Zeng Yi isolated the first Hiv-1 strain (HIV-1ac strain) in China, conducted research on the molecular epidemiology of HIV-1, and established a rapid diagnostic method for HIV. After obtaining the approval of the former Ministry of Health, the kit was promoted and used throughout the country, providing technical support for the prevention and control of AIDS in China.

In 1985, in order to strengthen AIDS research, Zeng Yi planned to introduce China's first p3 laboratory from Germany. Due to obstruction by the United States and other countries, the laboratory was not approved for export to China until 1987. Since then, the laboratory has played a huge role in AIDS research as well as during the SARS epidemic in 2003.
