"Watchmen" in the depths of the mountains

For more than 30 years, he has insisted on sending doctors to the elderly in mountainous areas

Trainee reporter Li Ting

Last weekend, a 90-year-old grandmother, who lives in Fushan Township, Huangyan District, Taizhou City, rushed to seek medical treatment for a skin infection associated with urticaria. But the old man lives in a mountainous area, far from the hospital. Zheng Qingguo, president and general practitioner of The Toyama Township Health Center, learned about the situation and immediately rushed to the home of the elderly and went to the outpatient clinic for treatment. In the afternoon of the same day, he went to the home of the elderly who had ulcers in his lower limbs to change his medicine. Zheng Qingguo's day is often spent in the mountains. For the past 30 years, he has insisted on sending doctors to the elderly in mountainous areas.

Located in the western mountains of Huangyan, Fushan Township has an average altitude of 560 meters, and it takes more than 1 hour to drive from Huangyan City to Fushan Township, and the mountain road is winding and winding. There are 10 administrative villages under the jurisdiction of Toyama Township, covering more than 10,000 people, but the township health center has only 19 medical staff. At his busiest time, Zheng Qingguo saw more than 100 patients a day. He is always patient and attentive to patients, especially the elderly. From the pennant hanging on the wall of his examination room, it can be seen that this is a doctor who "regards the elderly as relatives".

All along, Zheng Qingguo's phone has been kept open 24 hours a day, just afraid that some elderly patients will suddenly call. He and his colleagues also often go up the mountain to tour the elderly for free clinics.

Xu Caiying, an 86-year-old villager in Tian'ao Village, is an empty-nester with children working outside the home. The elderly have suffered from chronic diseases such as hypertension and diabetes for more than 10 years, and they have to take a variety of drugs every day. But because of illiteracy and poor memory, the elderly often forget to take medicine or take the wrong dose. To this end, Zheng Qingguo often goes to the homes of the elderly, carefully guides her to take medicines, and each time he will help the elderly to classify the drugs and put them away for convenience.

After getting along for a long time, Xu Caiying regarded Zheng Qingguo as his own relative, and when he encountered physical discomfort, he would think of Zheng Qingguo for the first time. Now, the elderly live in a nursing home, although there are professional nursing staff to take care of, but Zheng Qingguo will often visit, but also through the phone to inquire about the situation of the elderly.

In recent years, Zheng Qingguo has also come to the door to carry out hospice care services for patients with terminal cancer. The wife of Zhou Guoguo, a villager in Ying League Village, is suffering from advanced esophageal cancer, and the family hopes that Zheng Qingguo can come to the door to help patients improve the quality of life of advanced cancer. After Zheng Qingguo inquired about the patient's basic situation, he proposed a detailed plan. In the service for more than a month, Zheng Qingguo drove two hours a day to and from the hospital, without interruption, and did not charge a single outpatient fee.

Zheng Qingguo used his enthusiasm and care to build a bridge of love to help the elderly in mountainous areas to achieve medical treatment.
