The inauguration ceremony was presided over by The President of the new Congress of Peru, Maria Alba. After Castillo took the oath, Alva wore him a red and white presidential ribbon symbolizing presidential power.

In his inaugural address, Castillo said that July 28 is the 200th anniversary of Peru's independence and it is a great honor to be sworn in here. Castillo said the new government's top priority remains to continue to fight COVID-19 because health care is a fundamental right. Castillo pledged to further strengthen the construction of medical facilities in Peru and, at the end of his term of office, deliver at least one specialist hospital in every region of the country.

Castillo said that in his future administration, he will focus on fighting corruption and putting the interests of the majority of the people first, and everything will be decided by the people. Analysts pointed out that although Castillo's people-oriented and self-interest commitment has won the support of the people, he will still face many challenges and tests after taking office, including continuing to prevent and control the rebound of the new crown epidemic and promote the economic restart. In particular, his proposed reforms, such as the enactment of a new constitution, changes to the current model of the market economy, and the nationalization of strategic sectors such as oil, mining, and energy, will not be easy to implement.

According to local media reports, the heads of state of Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia and Ecuador, the King of Spain, the Vice President of Brazil and the Foreign Minister of Uruguay attended the inauguration ceremony. (Reporter Liao Junhua)
