After Japan's defeat, Hoshino made an effort to climb in the Go world, reaching the fifth dan in 1953, winning the Prime Minister's Cup in 1966, and entering the Honinbo War and Celebrity War round-robin circles many times after the age of fifty, and rising to nine dan at the age of 59 in 1977. However, Hoshino, unlike ordinary chess players, does not live in Tokyo, but usually works as a farmer in his hometown of Yamanashi Prefecture, and only goes to Tokyo to play chess when there is a game, which is unique in the World of Go.
Hoshino retired in 1984 and won the Retirement Chess Championship in 1985, dying in 1991 at the age of 73. In addition to the long number of 411 hands, Hoshino also set a surprising record of sixteen hours of a chess long exam before entering the section, which is a strange person who is difficult to find in a hundred years in the history of Go.
