In 1923, the famous geoscientist Mr. Feng Jinglan returned from studying at Columbia University in the United States, and his eyes were locked on the Central Plains, and the first generation of geoscience majors in the Central Plains was created at the then Zhongzhou University (the predecessor of Henan University).

In the 1950s and 1960s, during the period of national faculty adjustment, the Department of Geography of Henan University was identified by the state as one of the two geography departments in the central and southern regions. The geography disciplines of Hunan University, Wuhan Zhongyuan University, Zhengzhou University and Xinxiang Normal College have been merged into Henan University, becoming one of the most powerful geography departments in the country's colleges and universities, and also laying the foundation for the geography disciplines of Henan University today.
Geography is now the dominant discipline in Henan Province. In the 2012 and 2009 Ministry of Education's first-level subject assessments, geography ranked 11th and 8th in terms of grades. In the fourth round of subject evaluation by the Ministry of Education, the subject of geography was rated B+.

At present, the geography teacher team of the College of Geography and Environment of Henan University is led by academicians and composed of outstanding talents such as the National Jieqing and the "Hundred Talents Plan" of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, which is a teaching team with an international vision and complementary talents of the old, middle-aged and young echelons. National Teaching Outstanding Achievement Award, National University Excellent Textbook Award, National Excellent Curriculum, National Teaching Team, National Characteristic Major, National Comprehensive Reform Pilot Major, National Bilingual Teaching, National Teaching Famous Teacher, Huang Danian-style Teacher Team... They received almost all awards and honors related to quality engineering from the Ministry of Education.
The team has presided over the completion of more than 100 national projects such as the National Support Program, the 973 Program, the Spark Project, the Key Research and Development Project, and the National Key Natural Science Foundation; the research results have won the second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, the first prize of the Henan Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award, the first prize of the Henan Provincial Social Science Achievement Award, and other heavyweight honors; and published thousands of papers and hundreds of monographs in authoritative journals at home and abroad in the field of geoscience.

This is still a team that does scientific research on the ground. Kaifeng, where Henan University is located, is located in the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River. From the very beginning of its inception, the team of geography teachers of Henan University has been determined to serve the country as the foundation, the Yellow River civilization as the cultural characteristic, the Yellow River Basin as the regional research characteristic, keep up with the pace of the new era, take root in the Central Plains, face the national strategy, serve the national and local social and economic development, and give full play to the function of think tanks and decision-making support.
