A general known as "Chen Laohu"
General Chen Huacheng was born in 1776 in Tong'an Bingzhou, Xiamen, from an early age to learn water, martial arts, at the age of 16 into the military, repeatedly promoted to Yipin, at the age of 54 as the Fujian Water Division Admiralty, that is, the commander of the Fujian Navy at that time.
On the eve of the outbreak of the Opium War, British warships harassed the southeast coast of our country, and the marine division he led repeatedly defeated the British army, and was called "Chen Tiger" by the British army.
Chen Huacheng in the Opium War
After the outbreak of the Opium War in 1840, in order to strengthen the military defense of Jiangnan, the Qing government specially dispatched Chen Hua, who had made great military achievements, to become the viceroy of Jiangnan, stationed in Wusongkou, Shanghai, an important gateway to Jiangnan, and ruled the coastal defense of Jiangsu and Zhejiang.
In June 1842, the British army attacked Wusongkou with 7 warships and 5 steamships, carrying more than 200 guns. Chen Huacheng was not afraid of a strong enemy and ordered a return fire on the British ships, injuring 4 British ships. When the fort was attacked by the British army on land and water, and the defenders collapsed one after another, Chen Huacheng still led dozens of his own soldiers to hold the position. The subordinate urged the general to go first, and the general said with a mighty spirit: "I am ordered to suppress the thieves, and there is no retreat, and I want to repay the country with death!" In the end, General Chen Huacheng led his troops in a bloody battle and martyred the country.
In the winter of the same year, the coffin of Chen Huacheng's body was transported back to his hometown of Xiamen for burial. On the day the coffin returned to Xiamen, hundreds of thousands of people in Shanghai spontaneously sent it to each other, crying. At that time, almost every household in Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces hung a statue of General Chen Huacheng to worship.
In 1937, when the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression broke out, the people of Shanghai carried the idol of General Chen Huacheng into the City God Temple and enshrined it, hoping that he could bless the peace of the Shanghai side and inspire future generations to heroically kill the enemy and resist Japanese aggression. The national hero eventually becomes the city god who guards the peace of one side.
