On November 22, the Chinese Academy of Engineering announced the 2019 academician co-optation list, and Dr. Wang Jian, the "father of Alibaba Cloud", was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (Faculty of Engineering Management).
(1) Study and university work experience
Wang Jian was admitted to the former Department of Psychology of Hangzhou University in 1980 and received a bachelor's degree in 1984; at the graduate level, he studied under Professor Zhu Zuxiang, a famous psychologist and ergonomics scientist in China, and obtained a doctorate in psychology in 1990, and stayed on to teach. He was promoted to professor in 1992, served as a doctoral supervisor since 1993, and was the director of the Department of Psychology of the former Hangzhou University (after 1998 years, the Department of Psychology and Behavioral Sciences of Zhejiang University) and the director of the National Professional Laboratory of Industrial Psychology from 1993 to 1999. During his studies and work in the department, his main research areas include virtual reality and intelligent human-computer interaction, aeronautical psychology, and cognitive ergonomics. In 1998, it was selected as the "151" talent project in Zhejiang Province. Dr. Wang Jian is a standing director of the Chinese Computer Society, and was awarded the Outstanding Contribution Award of the Chinese Computer Society in 2008 and was selected as "China's Top Ten Outstanding Youths" by the Chinese Computer Society yocsef. Dr. Wang Jian is also an editorial board member of the Communications of the ACM.

(ii) Microsoft work experience
Prior to joining Alibaba, Dr. Jian Wang was executive vice president of Microsoft Research Asia, where he was responsible for user interface, machine learning, large-scale data processing and beijing adcenter lab, where he was responsible for researching key technologies and systems related to data-driven software (including data architecture and analysis for sqm and watson), technologies related to Microsoft advertising platforms, and seamless personal computing.
Dr. Wang Jian was responsible for the development of the sqm large-scale data processing system that was used to help develop Office 2007 and dozens of Microsoft products. The research results of the Beijing adcenter laboratory are also widely used in Microsoft's new generation of advertising systems. The digital ink technology invented by Dr. Wang Jian has been applied to tablet PC, onenote 2003, windows xp tablet pc edition 2005, windows vista and the next generation of Windows and other products.
The group led by Dr. Wang Jian invented a modeless switching user interface that supports Asian languages and is applied to software such as Windows XP and Office XP. The handwritten mathematical formula recognizer was first introduced in the world in 2005 and was dedicated to president and wife when President Hu Jintao visited Microsoft in 2006.
(3) Joined Alibaba and was once considered a liar
Dr. Wang Joined Alibaba Group in September 2008 as Chief Architect, helping Alibaba Group build a world-class technical team and being responsible for the Group's technical architecture and basic technology platform construction. In July 2009, he was appointed Chief Technology Officer of Alibaba Software.
In Alibaba's press release announcing Wang Jian's official joining, there is a description that "Dr. Wang Jian will help Alibaba Group build a world-class technical team."
However, at that time, Wang Jian's team was not optimistic about the technical personnel in the industry at all, "they were not even from the operating system." At that time, Wang Jian's two labels became a strong proof that he was later ridiculed as a "liar", could not write code, and a student of psychology.
Wang Jian's Alibaba Cloud spent a lot of money but could not achieve results, and many people in the society concluded that Wang Jian was a liar, saying that his ideas were unrealistic. In the company's internal forums, the voice of doubt has not stopped. And Ma Yun expressed his trust in Wang Jian in one sentence: "I invest 1 billion yuan in Alibaba Cloud every year, invest ten years, and I can't say it again." ”
Wang Jian was faced with an important choice at that time, the initial cloud computing technology was prepared with two hands, and the "Cloud Ladder 1" based on open source technology and the "Cloud Ladder 2" based on self-developed Flying Sky have been parallel. Three months can not divert the team to study two projects at the same time, two "ladders" can only abandon one, Wang Jian chose "feitian". In a critical situation, no one complained anymore, Wang Jian pointed out the direction so that all engineers fully invested in research and development, and finally at the end of June 2013, Alibaba Cloud Computing successfully passed the stability test, in the case of violent power outage, ten servers hung up, but the data was unscathed. In 2017, Wang Jian's "Feitian" won the first special prize for scientific and technological progress in the 15 years of the Chinese Institute of Electronics.
The latest financial report shows that Alibaba Cloud's quarterly revenue was 9.291 billion yuan, a net increase of 3.624 billion yuan over the same period last year, with a growth rate of 64%. According to Gartner, Alibaba Cloud ranked first in the Asia-Pacific market in 2018, with a market share of 19.6%, an increase of 4.7 percentage points over the previous year. This market share has exceeded that of Amazon and Microsoft combined.
In recent years, Wang Jian has paid more attention to the landing of the Urban Brain Project. In his view, cities should have a new infrastructure to make the most of all the new technologies today, and the city brain is the new infrastructure of the future city.
At present, most of the more than 1,000 academicians of the chinese academies and the Chinese Academy of Sciences come from scientific research institutes, colleges and universities, and large state-owned enterprises. Wang Jian is one of the few technical talents from private enterprises. According to the 2019 Hurun Rich List released in October 2019, Wang Jian ranked 1008th in the 2019 Hurun Rich List with a wealth of 4.1 billion yuan.
