Addis Ababa, 4 Oct (Xinhua) -- Abi Ahmed Ali was sworn in as prime minister of the new government in the Ethiopian parliament on October 4 for a five-year term.

The Ethiopian parliament held the inauguration ceremony of the members of the lower house of the new federal parliament at the same time. Speaking in Parliament, President Sahel Walker of Ethiopia wished Abie and the elected members of parliament success in their terms of office and hoped that they would work together to build the country.

In the afternoon of the same day, the Ethiopian government held a celebration ceremony in Moskell Square in the center of addis Ababa, and the heads of state of some African countries, representatives of African regional organizations, and envoys to Ethiopia attended the event.

Speaking at the ceremony, Abi condemned the armed conflict in the Tigray region of the north of the country. He said a national dialogue involving all parties would be launched to narrow differences.

According to the Ethiopian Constitution, members of the lower house of the Federal Parliament are elected by universal national suffrage, re-elected every five years, and the party with the majority of seats is responsible for forming the cabinet. In the parliamentary elections held in June this year, the ruling Prosperity Party won the election with an absolute majority, and the current prime minister and Prosperity Party chairman, Abi, became the prime minister of the new government.

In February 2018, due to the instability of the domestic situation and other reasons, then-Prime Minister Haile Mariam resigned. Abiy became Prime Minister of Ethiopia in April of that year.
