Treat wet waste with insects? What the hell is going on

In the Pharmacopoeia of Chinese Medicine, the dried larvae of the insect Big-headed Golden Fly or other closely related insects of the family Liliaceae are called "grain worms". The grain worm is large and the outer skin is thinner, and the animal can fully digest after eating this insect feed.

After our daily kitchen waste is crushed, it can be used to raise grain worms. After dozens of days of development cycles, this egg grows into a larva, and the dried insect protein content obtained by roasting and drying is very high, which can be used as feed. Taking advantage of the characteristics of grain insects that are afraid of light and heat, the photothermal device on the production line can automatically separate the larvae from the insect manure. After the larvae are burned, they become dry and hard "frozen worms" through low-temperature particle freezing technology, which is used as insect protein feed; insect manure is transported to the composting workshop for fermentation and becomes organic fertilizer.

Is it a good way to raise insects with wet garbage?

At present, there are two mainstream treatment methods of wet waste:

First, the construction of large-scale centralized treatment devices without oxygen production, the average daily treatment capacity of up to several hundred tons, but the method is relatively slow, long cycle, and odor, easy to produce infiltration and odorous toxic gases.

The second is the decentralized disposal through small biochemical treatment devices, with an average daily disposal capacity ranging from hundreds of kilograms to several tons, and the problem with biochemical devices is that there will be wastewater, waste gas and slag in the disposal process.

Both biogas and biochemical slag need to be disposed of separately. However, if wet garbage is used to raise insects, there is basically no slag generated.

In terms of environmental issues, everyone has questions, such as whether aquaculture produces wastewater. Does it smell bad? Is there a corresponding processing device? Whether the bugs are easy to manage, etc.

"When the average daily treatment of wet garbage reaches tens of tons, the impact on the environment will be revealed. Under the standard factory building, in the closed environment, the insect breeding will inevitably have a taste. In addition, if the larvae are processed using freezing technology instead of roasting and drying, they need to be cleaned, and wastewater will be generated. Zhang Haizhong, technical leader of Zhejiang Jiaxing Traceability Technology Company, introduced that in the long run, large-scale breeding still needs to be equipped with waste gas and wastewater treatment devices.

It is not so easy to keep insects in wet garbage

In the process of insect farming, land use is a big problem. Taking Shanghai Dongchen Insect Breeding Company as an example, the current average daily wet waste treatment capacity is about 8 tons, and the required land area is about 5,000 square meters.

According to the experience of cultivating red-headed maggots, it is estimated that if the average daily wet waste disposal capacity of 100 tons is reached, it will take about 20 acres of land.

Farmed bugs also face marketing problems. Zhang Haizhong tried to breed red-headed fly maggots for two years, which is currently in the stage of suspension. Zhang Haizhong calculated an account, before the company's average daily wet waste disposal capacity of 15 tons, the average daily output of dry insects is only 500 catties, "the amount is too small, it is difficult to find stable large customers." Zhang Haizhong suggested that the average daily wet waste treatment scale should not be less than 50 tons. In addition, some self-employed individuals breed fly maggots, "they do not have to hire people, do not have to install environmental protection facilities, the cost is low, pulling down the market price of dry insects." ”

Raising insects with wet garbage is a new attempt in garbage sorting and disposal. In the process, a variety of challenges may arise, including how to properly dispose of wastewater and exhaust gases. However, if this attempt can be successful in Shanghai, and it can be scaled and industrialized, and the wet garbage can be turned into treasure, it will be a great thing to promote the reduction of garbage in the country and even the world. But the exploration process also needs to be negotiated with the relevant departments, whether it is land, or to obtain sufficient wet waste raw materials.
