Cao Zidan, a famous jurist and the first director of the law department of China University of Political Science and Law, passed away at the age of 90

The Surging News reporter learned from the Law School of China University of Political Science and Law that Professor Cao Zidan, a famous jurist, retired cadre and the first director of the law department of China University of Political Science and Law, died on July 4, 2019 at the age of 90 in Beijing Changping District Hospital due to ineffective medical treatment.

The Law School of China University of Political Science and Law said that the farewell ceremony of Professor Cao Zidan's body is scheduled to be held at 10 a.m. on July 8, 2019 in the second farewell hall of Changping Funeral Home.

According to public resumes, Cao Zidan, a contemporary criminal law scientist, was born in Yongxing, Hunan In 1929, studied at Peking University from 1950 to 1952, and in the winter of 1952, he was adjusted to the newly established Beijing University of Political Science and Law with his department, and graduated early and stayed on to teach.

From 1955 to 1959, Cao Zidan was sent by the state to the graduate school of Leningrad University in the former Soviet Union for further study, under the supervision of professor Mi D. Chargotsky, a famous Criminal Law Scholar of the Soviet Union, specializing in criminal law and receiving an associate doctorate. Cao Zidan began recruiting master's degree students in 1979 and served as the director of the Criminal Law Department, the director of the Law Department, and the executive vice dean of the Graduate School of China University of Political Science and Law. After retiring, Cao Zidan served as a director of the China Association of Old Professors and served as the chairman of the Political science and law professional committee, an adviser to the Criminal Law Research Society of the China Law Society, and a member of the Expert Committee of Chinese Behavioral Law.

In 1979, after the reopening of the Beijing University of Political Science and Law, Cao Zidan was appointed director of the Criminal Law Teaching and Research Office and head of the Criminal Law Graduate Guidance Group. During his 6-year tenure, he devoted great efforts to the construction of the criminal law discipline of China University of Political Science and Law, and successively organized the teachers of the teaching and research department to write and translate a large number of teaching books, such as "Compilation of China's Criminal Law Materials" and "Foreign Criminal Law Research Materials".

In addition, he has been involved in a large number of criminal legislation and criminal justice work. As a member of the Criminal Law Legislation Expert Group of the Legislative Affairs Committee of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, Cao Zidan successively participated in the discussion of nearly 20 draft supplementary provisions of the Criminal Law, including the punishment of corruption, bribery, and smuggling, and actively participated in the demonstration of the new Criminal Law in 1997. At the invitation of the Supreme People's Court, the Supreme People's Procuratorate and other judicial organs, he has repeatedly participated in expert discussions on judicial interpretations.

In 1985, Cao Zidan was appointed head of the law department of China University of Political Science and Law, and in 1989 he was appointed executive vice dean of the Graduate School. At the same time, he also served as the first, second and third directors of the Chinese Law Society, the first, second and third vice presidents of the Chinese Criminal Law Research Association, the academic committee member of the Institute of Law of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, and participated in many important conferences such as the 14th Congress of the Vienna International Criminal Law Association in 1989 and the First Cross-Strait Legal Seminar in Taipei in 1992. In 1993, the State Council awarded him a special government allowance for "experts with outstanding contributions".

After retiring, Cao Zidan was invited to serve as the chairman of the Political and Legal Professional Committee of the China Association of Old Professors. In view of his contribution to the cause of the old professor, the China Old Professors Association awarded him the "Excellence Award for The Old Professor's Scientific and Educational Work".
