The general debate of the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly opened at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on the 21st local time. The theme of the UN General Assembly is "Forging Resilience, Forever Having Hope", and the President of the UN General Assembly, Shahid, and the UN Secretary-General Guterres delivered speeches.
In his speech, Guterres said that we are moving in the wrong direction on the edge of the abyss and that people must wake up. From the COVID-19 pandemic to the climate crisis, from regional conflicts to the gap between rich and poor, the world must come together to solve problems of humanity's own making.
Secretary-General of the United Nations Guterres
On the one hand, we see a record speed of vaccine development, a triumph of science and human ingenuity, and on the other hand, we see this victory defeated by a lack of political will, selfishness and mistrust. Some countries have too many vaccines, while others are out of stock. Most of the rich countries have been vaccinated, and more than 90% of the African people are waiting for the first shot, which is a moral indictment of our current situation, which is disdainful, we passed the scientific test, but failed the moral test.
Guterres also said the international community was facing six major rifts that must be bridged. These six fissures include the rift of global peace, the rift in addressing climate change, the rift in the gap between rich and poor, the rift in gender differences, the digital network divide and the rift between generations.
Subsequently, the President of the 76th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, Shaheed, said in his speech that the theme of the United Nations General Assembly was "Forging Resilience and Forever Having Hope", and he called on all countries to actively invest in the five aspects of epidemic recovery, sustainable development, protection of the green earth, respect for people's rights and revitalization of the United Nations.
