In Captain Marvel, Annette Bening's Marwell (who is also Supreme Wisdom & Wendy Lawson) is not a woman in the original screenplay. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the film's directors Anna Burton, Ryan Frick and screenwriter Gineval de Wollet Robinson revealed that in the first version of the script, Marvel was a man like in the comics, and they had begun to look for a male actor to play the role before making changes.
Kevin Feige said: "We have preliminarily discussed the use of male actors to play Marwell, but we have not been specific. We looked at the list and really made a mistake. In the end, it was director Anna Burton who proposed that Marwell be a woman and put Marwell in the same role as Supreme Wisdom. As for why Annette Bening played the role, Freke revealed that they were both fans of Benin and that Benin had all the qualities the character needed.
