More than a year ago, I sent a WeChat tweet called "The Godfather of Hong Kong Movie Posters - Ruan Da Yong", which was also the first article in China to detail Teacher Ruan Da Yong. At that time, I made a mistake and mistakenly said that the movie poster of "Flying Dragon" was from Teacher Ruan's hand, so that all the articles that introduced Teacher Ruan later were wrong along with me, and it seems that I am really harmful

Therefore, there is today's WeChat, which also introduces you to a teacher cui Cheng'an who is also recognized as one of the top portrait masters in Hong Kong and has the same weight as Ruan Dayong.

When I wrote it that year, I did not investigate clearly, and mistakenly said that "Flying Dragon General" was painted by Ruan Da Yong

Many people say that Ruan Dayong and Cui Cheng'an's writing style is very similar, the color is very similar, and the composition is very similar, I agree very much, and I think they even have some similarities. In reality, Nguyen Da Yong and Choi Thanh An are also good friends, and they have also worked together to complete two paintings with Bruce Lee as the theme.

The Bruce Lee paintings that Cui Cheng'an and Nguyen Da Yong collaborated on, can we see that part of it is Cui Cheng'an painting, and that part is Ruan Da Yong's painting?

Choi Sung-on, a native of Gaowai County, Guangdong Province, moved from Guangzhou to Hong Kong in 1955 and graduated from the Department of Western and Chinese Painting of the "Linghai Art College" in Hong Kong in 1968; subsequently, he has been engaged in photography and fine arts, including Ming Pao, Sing Tao Daily, Jade Dynasty, TVB, Li's TV, Jiayi TV, Radio Television Hong Kong, Jiahe and New Art City. He immigrated to Canada in 1997 and taught art at the Canadian Education Bureau and privately, and also participated in television and drama.

In 2003, he participated in a sculpture competition held in Canada with a Bruce Lee painting, and won the first prize of the branding expert group, the champion of the whole field and the choice of contestants.

Mr. Cui also draws cartoons and illustrations, and his works appear in different forms, among which, in addition to the evocative comic journals "Tianlong Boy" and "Weilong Detective", he also draws illustrations for various novels, and has also been a TV station set designer, film scene design and responsible for character modeling design, especially good at drawing portraits and movie posters, he has painted more famous movie posters such as "Mr. Jiang Corpse", "Flying Dragon Fierce" and "Children of the Troubled World", etc., "Movie Poster Design Master", "Portrait Master", "Martial Arts Illustrator Master" and other titles.

Learn by copying and doing

Cui Cheng'an liked to paint since he was a child, and from an early age he hoped to find a job related to painting, but there were not many related jobs at that time, so his parents had to arrange for him to be a paint apprentice in the "three lines", as if it was out of reach, but it was really some art-related work.

Teacher Cui said: "The 'three elements' will draw small sign billboards for some herbal tea shops and small shops such as Shiduo, that is, hanging wooden signs with two chains in the shop, and sometimes making sets for the big theater, of course, my gang does not have a part to paint." ”

One day, when he saw ming pao's advertisement for "drawing trainees", he couldn't wait to run to apply. At first, he was just running errands in the company to send manuscripts, and then because the company wanted to publish a magazine of martial arts novels, he was asked to draw illustrations of novels. Since then, he has truly begun his art career.

I knew that I lacked experience and was not qualified enough, but in order to cope with the work, I had to find other novel illustrations to copy, especially the works of Jiang Yunxing (pen name: Yunjun), an illustrator of Jin Yong's novels, "He is my founding ancestor." In other words, Jiang Yunxing was his enlightenment teacher, prompting him to create a martial arts world with his brush all the time.

He claimed that all his painting kilometers originated from Jiang Yunxing, and at the beginning, whether it was brushwork or method, it was "copying" the other party, "not a 'copy' of consciousness" His most common method was to cover Jiang's original illustration with a blank piece of paper, and then, a stroke and a line and a drawing like a gourd copied out, "At that time, I just simply liked to paint, there was no foundation, I could only rely on this way to paint." ”

Later, in order to lay a good foundation, Mr. Cui went to the famous private art school "Linghai Art College" to learn painting, and the principal waived his tuition fee for two years because of his talent and economic situation, so that he could concentrate on his studies without worries.

Work hard and practice your skills

Later, he was recruited to join the Cui Wei Group, a publishing house that accounted for 90% of the market share that year, and Huang Yulang, who had not yet become famous at that time, was also his colleague, and his main job was to draw comics for the company's magazines.

"Illustration is always different from comics, comics are to tell stories, to start and close, this time the problem came again, so I had to go to the newsstand to buy all the comic books and go home to study, practice for 3 days and then go to work." 」

Because his salary was calculated according to the amount of manuscripts, he had to keep delivering manuscripts to increase his income, but later the editor kept withdrawing his manuscripts, and simply wrote on a note that "Cheng An painting is very inferior, it is not suitable to choose" for the responsible colleagues to circulate, and soon after he was fired.

"At that time, the economic environment was poor, I slept in the park because I had no money to pay rent, and I could only eat one loaf of bread per meal, which lasted for a few weeks, and then I was introduced by a friend to find a job, and from then on I vowed to practice my painting skills and no longer live on the street."

After that, a large-scale comic contest was held in Hong Kong, and in order to win the competition, he practiced very hard every day, and finally he won the second place, so he was hired again by the "Cui Wei Group" and officially went to work as a "cartoonist" from then on.

"Weilong Detective" is Cui Cheng'an's 1985 jackie chan movie "Weilong Detective" as a book title and reference, he went to London to shoot scenes, shooting materials, and even went to the Jackie Chan film shooting place to visit him, this level of investment can not be done in comics now!

Paint stars, paint posters

Later, Choi Joined the "Crane Ming Publishing House", in addition to drawing sketch comics, celebrities and fairy tales for its publications, he also began to paint the covers of Hong Kong editions of comics imported from Taiwan, such as "Earth Pioneer" and "Little Man Tornado", etc. His works were popular with the public and his popularity increased accordingly, but due to the sluggish publishing industry at that time, it was not enough to make comics to cope with life.

"Fortunately, I usually studied photography, and took advantage of the fact that the company launched a very popular women's magazine "Sister", so I also worked as an entertainment reporter, I have visited a lot of big news, the most sensational must be the news about bruce Lee's death, and in order to preemptively report, I also followed other connoisseurs to the spiritual hall to shoot his coffin!" 」

After that, Mr. Cui did not stay in a publishing house to draw long works like other cartoonists, he once assisted Wang Ze in drawing "Lao FuZi Line Comics", sometimes drawing covers and illustrations for the works of martial arts novel masters (such as Gu Long and Chen Haihong, etc.), and also drawing posters for government and commercial institutions.

He then joined Radio Television Hong Kong for seven years, working mainly as an artist for the classic children's show Banana Boat and educational television. After work, he worked part-time to paint propaganda posters for major film companies and television stations, he painted more famous movie posters such as "Mr. Jiang Corpse", "Flying Dragon" and "Children of the Troubled World", etc. I have to mention that the first TV series poster in Hong Kong history, "Condor Heroes", is also from his handwriting, so Mr. Cui has made remarkable contributions to the film and television industry that year.

Mr. Cui is famous for his solid painting skills, drawing character movements and expressions are particularly meticulous, and he is one of the few cartoonists who are good at painting star portraits, so in the 1980s, when Hong Kong comics flourished again, he also published many works with star portraits as comic characters, including "Wesley Legend Paper Monkey" headed by Xu Guanjie, "Weilong Detective" with Jackie Chan as the prototype, "Miss" based on a number of popular female stars, and star illustrations and posters in the comprehensive comic "Yulang Comics".

By 1993, a generation of grandmaster Huang Yulang once again founded the "Jade Dynasty" and founded Teacher Cui, who was responsible for "hooking the head" (painting the face) for his pioneering work "The Legend of the Son of Heaven", and published a work adapted from the film "The Legend of the White-Haired Witch" to open up the market.

It is very difficult to paint with stars, you need to look like a god, shape, and add action, only a very few cartoonists can do it that year, and Cui Cheng'an is even more representative of it!

Promote art on the other side

In 1997, Mr. Cui immigrated to Canada with his family and left the Hong Kong painting scene where he had worked for decades, but he did not give up painting art, in addition to teaching apprenticeships in the local area and cultivating British materials, he also launched painting collections in Bibang from time to time, and he extended his paintings from paper to purple sand teapots, as well as paintings painted on wood with welding pens, and his works won numerous awards in many competitions in the United States and Canada.

Even though Mr. Chui has been living in Canada for many years, the Hong Kong Centre for The Arts awarded him the Greater China Outstanding Design Award in 2013, an authoritative award in recognition of his artistic achievements and contributions.

In recent years, Mr. Cui has painted many works based on Bruce Lee and has also launched a number of Bruce Lee painting albums, including the film "Raptor Across the River" and "Jingwumen" illustrated by the film company authorized by the film company.

When asked if he intended to return to Hong Kong Comics, he said: "Since immigrating, there is no such plan, now it is all about interest first, painting Bruce Lee is also out of love for idols, thinking back to when I was an entertainment journalist, I was glad to know Bruce Lee, he is first-class in both character and martial arts, so I hope to use a paintbrush to portray his movements and pass it on." ”
