Origin
It is the spine of the sour jujube of the family Rhamnosidae.
It can be harvested and dried all year round.
It grows on sunny or dry hillsides, valleys, hills, plains, roadsides, and wastelands. Drought tolerant, often forming bushes.
It is distributed in North China, Northwest China and Liaoning, Shandong, Jiangsu, Anhui, Henan, Hubei and Sichuan.

Sour jujube Deciduous shrub, sparsely reduced as a small tree, 1-3 m tall. The leaves are oblong-ovate to ovate lanceolate, blunt at the apex, rounded at the base, slightly skewed, and finely serrated at the edges. Small flowers, 2-3 clusters of leaf axils; sepals 5 lobes, lobes ovate triangle; petals 5, yellow-green, alternate with sepals, stamens 5, opposite to petals;
The flower disc is obvious, 10 shallow lobes; the ovary is oval, buried in the flower disc, and the flower column is 2 split. The drupe is fleshy, nearly spherical, dark reddish-brown when ripe, and the peel is thin and sour. The flowering period is from June to July, and the fruit period is from September to October.
