Erotomania is a rare mental illness in which people fall into the delusion of falling in love with another person (usually of higher social status). Paranoia, also known as Krehombo syndrome, commemorates a 1921 paper by the French psychiatrist Créhomb (1872-1934) entitled les psychoses passionelles.

origin

Early articles describing this situation can be found in the works of Hippocrates, Eressis Tritus, Plutarch, and Galen, among others. It first appeared in the psychiatric literature in a paper written by Jack Ferrand in 1623. There were different names such as "old maid's psychosis", "erotic paranoia", and "erotic self-referent delusions", until names such as paranoia and Crécombo syndrome were commonly used.

Historical changes

The concept of paranoia has changed significantly at various stages in history:

1. Classical period - early 18th century: general disease caused by crush;

2. Early 18th century - early 19th century: excessive pursuit of physical love (such as people with abnormal sexual desires or pornographers);

3. Early 19th century - early 20th century: a crush like a mental illness;

4. The delusion of "being loved by others" in the early 20th century now.

Contemporary symptoms:

The main symptom of this syndrome is that the patient may have the illusion of secretly falling in love with another person (usually of higher social status). Patients may also believe that their illusory objects are secretly conveying their love in ways such as body gestures, furniture, and other seemingly unconscious movements (or, if the subject is a mass figure, through the media). The object that gives the patient the illusion generally has little or no contact with the patient, and the patient believes that his object has a fictitious unfolding and relationship with himself. Paranoia is mainly found in the main symptoms of delusional disorder or some of the symptoms of schizophrenia.

The pathology of people with paranoia usually points to celebrities with identity and status, or strangers, such as netizens in the virtual world. Some patients have delusional objects of more than one, feeling that many people are having a crush on themselves. Patients believe that the other person is conveying love to themselves through special eyes, postures, or furnishings of household items, or signals sent by the media, or telepathy. Dr Mark Griffith, a professor of psychology at Nottingham Trent University in the United Kingdom, said that patients would write letters, call each other, give gifts, and even visit the unsuspecting person in person. When these gestures of affection are rejected, they are still not dead-hearted, believing that the other party is out of identity concerns and has to hide their feelings for them from the public. Next, patients may appear to be following each other's behavior.

Hinkley's assassination of U.S. President Reagan was reported as a result of Hinkley's "delusion of being loved," believing that the president's death would allow Judy Costa to publicly declare her love for Hinkley.

Comedian David Lightman and retired astronaut Story Musgrave have been the object of Margaret Mary Ray's "delusions of love," while other stars such as Madana, Steven Spielberg, Barbara Manrell, and Linda Lonsdale have been repeatedly followed by people with paranoia about love.

Conundrum: It's hard to change the delusions of love

Studies have found that people with paranoia have shortcomings in interpersonal communication and intimacy, and are usually single. They may have been abused in childhood and adolescence, and may also be influenced by television, radio, books, and other media during their development. Some patients have lost their emotionally close lovers and turn to attachment to distant objects, thus gaining a psychological sense of security – so that they will not be dumped.

Paranoia is usually a manifestation of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or borderline personality. Zuo Xiaoping, deputy chief physician of the Department of Psychobehavioral behavior at the Brain Hospital Affiliated to Jinan University School of Medicine, said that the paranoia of love in psychiatry is similar to that of delusional love, which is mostly seen in mental disorders such as schizophrenia, but may also be only a psychological disorder. Clinically, it is necessary to judge whether it is mental illness, and the doctor should consider the factors such as personality characteristics, and it is not "self-made amorous" that can be presumptuously diagnosed.

Paranoia is very difficult to treat, patients stubbornly adhere to their own views, receive little help from medication, and do not listen to psychotherapy. Zuo Xiaoping said: "At the current level of medicine, even if patients receive compulsory treatment, it is useless. Taking schizophrenia as an example, the symptoms of the patient's relationship delusion and persecution delusion are relatively easy to eliminate, but the love delusion is difficult to eliminate, and after discharge, it is still the same, once you are entangled with them, you will have trouble for a lifetime. ”
